Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525200563
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 78

Book Description
Can international community step up to defend civilians whose basic rights are been jeopardized? What is the limit of sovereignty in the face of a human rights crisis? Should international community been legitimated to take action in defense of helpless civilians? Who ́s to determine when to act, if so? To address these and other question, this book will present you the concept of R2P – Responsibility to Protect. Throughout the work we will conduct you to analyze in which extent the responsibility to protect theory can influence the States behavior in intervention for human protection and discuss whether or not R2P has all the ingredients to be considered a customary international law. All of that will be done in the light of factual evidences conducting a comparative case study involving the interventions in Kosovo (late 1990's) and Libya (early 2010's). We will show and analyze changes in actions and procedures according to the new premises of R2P, addressing the legality of the intervention, the quickness of the response and the refrain in the use of veto power in the United Nations Security Council. If you are any interested in politics, international community and human rights, we invite you to travel together with us in this book for new concepts, reflections and a (potential) glimpse of the future.

Health and Human Security in the Mano River Union

Health and Human Security in the Mano River Union PDF Author: Mohamed Saliou Camara
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 149854939X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
This book is a study of the challenges facing the Mano River Union (MRU) countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire, with respect to health security and human security. The study is conducted against the backdrop of the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and in conjunction with the impact on human security of the civil wars that engulfed Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire in recent decades. The author explores the state of public health and national health systems across the sub-region with a view to identifying the underlying institutional and societal challenges facing each nation-state, as well as the potential for enhancing national health systems and creating an integrated regional system of health security. Furthermore, the author examines the challenges facing the MRU countries in the broader context of human security which encompasses physical and mental health; food security; environmental security; political security including law and order; and community security, such as the protection and empowerment of vulnerable segments of the population. The author concludes by recommending deeper regional integration, supranational governance and sovereign collective self-reliance within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the most viable strategic approach to the pervasive health and human security challenges in West Africa.

Human Security in Turkey

Human Security in Turkey PDF Author: Alpaslan Özerdem
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136658106
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
This edited volume explores human security challenges in the context of Turkey. Turkey occupies a critical geopolitical position between Europe, the Middle East and the Caucasus. It is an important peace-broker in regional conflicts and a leading country in peacekeeping operations, and has been a generous donor for disaster response around the world. However, Turkey is also facing a number of fundamental sociocultural and development challenges and its internal stability is affected by a protracted armed conflict based on Kurdish separatism. In other words, Turkey is at a crossroads in its transformation from a state-centred security perspective to one based on human security. To explore selected human security challenges within a wider context of peace and development, this volume focuses on a number of key issues in relation to democratization and social cohesion, before going on to investigate the role of Turkey as an agent of peace in the international context. Written by academics from the fields of peace studies, international relations, politics and development studies, the discussions examine and highlight the issues that Turkey must overcome if it is to successfully strengthen its human security trajectories in the near future. This book will be of much interest to students of human security, Turkish politics, conflict management, peace studies and IR in general.

Supermarkets and private standards of sustainability

Supermarkets and private standards of sustainability PDF Author: Tiago Matsuoka Megale
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525207649
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 121

Book Description
The current international economic scenario is characterized by the presence of an increasing number of multinational enterprises, the formation of global value chains and the creation of transnational regulatory networks. The aim of this book is to analyze to which extent private standards of sustainability imposed by supermarkets protect common values as the human life or health instead of constituting disguised restrictions to trade. The analysis and the case studies disclosed that the essence of the aforementioned standards can be determined through the limited scope of WTO treaties that regulate non-tariff barriers to trade and the search of coherence between supermarkets? sustainability policies and OECD rules.

10 valuable insights into the ancient Stoic thought for successful investing

10 valuable insights into the ancient Stoic thought for successful investing PDF Author: Mateus Abrita
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525230748
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
Moving average, Day Trade, bull spread, derivatives, Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda), dividends, technical analysis, fundamental analysis... There are many terms and areas of study within the investment market. However, one thing has always caught my attention since 2005, when I made my first investment in variable income. I observed that people were mesmerized with the market and with the possibilities of "easy" earnings and neglected a fundamental aspect in investments, the emotional and psychological side. In this sense, I was enchanted by the Stoic philosophy, which is pointed out by many as a practical philosophy, that is, it proposes instruments that will not only generate abstract reflection but that have the potential to effectively contribute to your daily lives through thinking techniques that can be adopted. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to raise just a few elements of this very important topic, full of nuances and particularities. If I manage to pique my dear reader's curiosity to study more the emotional aspects in decision making, as well as delve into Stoic philosophy, this work will have fulfilled its role.

Enhancing Deep Learning Performance Using Displaced Rectifier Linear Unit

Enhancing Deep Learning Performance Using Displaced Rectifier Linear Unit PDF Author: David Macêdo
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525230756
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 107

Book Description
Recently, deep learning has caused a significant impact on computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language understanding. In spite of the remarkable advances, deep learning recent performance gains have been modest and usually rely on increasing the depth of the models, which often requires more computational resources such as processing time and memory usage. To tackle this problem, we turned our attention to the interworking between the activation functions and the batch normalization, which is virtually mandatory currently. In this work, we propose the activation function Displaced Rectifier Linear Unit (DReLU) by conjecturing that extending the identity function of ReLU to the third quadrant enhances compatibility with batch normalization. Moreover, we used statistical tests to compare the impact of using distinct activation functions (ReLU, LReLU, PReLU, ELU, and DReLU) on the learning speed and test accuracy performance of VGG and Residual Networks state-of-the-art models. These convolutional neural networks were trained on CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100, the most commonly used deep learning computer vision datasets. The results showed DReLU speeded up learning in all models and datasets. Besides, statistical significant performance assessments (p

Religion, Public Health and Human Security in Nigeria

Religion, Public Health and Human Security in Nigeria PDF Author: Abiodun Alao
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000828093
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
This book critically examines the intersection of religion, public health and human security in Nigeria. Focusing on Christianity, Islam, traditional religions and "intra-religious" doctrinal divergencies, the book explores the impact faith has on health-related decisions and how this affects security in Nigeria. The book assesses the connection between religion and five contemporary major health and medical issues in the country. This includes the issue of epidemics and pandemics such as the Covid-19 pandemic, vaccines, contraception, blood transfusion and the controversies associated with "miracle healing". In particular, this book explores situations where individuals have the power of choice but instead embraces faith and religious positions that contradict science in the management of their health and, in the process, expose themselves and others to personal health insecurity. It investigates aspects of human security including the wider international ramifications of health issues, approaches to cures and the interpretation of causes of diseases, as well as the ethno-religious connotations of such interpretations. Exploring key issues that have brought religion into the politics of health and human security in Nigeria, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in the field of African Religion, African Politics, African Studies, public health, security, and Sociology.

Spectral method for fatigue damage estimation with non-zero mean stress

Spectral method for fatigue damage estimation with non-zero mean stress PDF Author: Pedro H. Alves Corrêa
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525253217
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
This thesis consists of a fatigue study carried out on an aluminum alloy 2024-T3 in both time domain and frequency domain. Non-zero mean random signals of strain and stress are analyzed in time domain using usual Rainflow method and the damage is accumulated with the Palmgren-Miner rule, according to mean stress equations. The signals are analyzed in frequency domain using the power spectral density and the probability density function. The spectral domain analysis does not consider the negative effect of the mean stress in metal life under fatigue, so the correction factors for mean stresses developed by Goodman, Morrow, and Smith-Watson-Topper are used to change the power spectral density and, thus, the damage calculated by the probability density functions postulated by Dirlik and Tovo and Benasciutti. It is found that both Dirlik and Tovo and Benasciutti are non-conservative for a non-zero mean stress signal when comparing the damage to the one obtained in time domain analysis. When the spectral method is corrected, the results vary from Rainflow 4.9% for wide band and 6.8% for narrow band signals, always in the conservative zone, therefore predicting more damage. Tovo and Benasciutti 2 method is found to be the spectral function with the closest results when compared to the usual Rainflow method in time domain.

The long and winding lawsuit

The long and winding lawsuit PDF Author: Rodrigo Meira
Publisher: Editora Dialética
ISBN: 6525279909
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
When transnational couples split, one of the parents wants to reestablish the status quo ante. But now there is a child. Rodrigo Meira brings to light this problem in Brazil and delivered the first research that has delved into the court files, with a view to understanding international abduction in Brazil. The author worked at the Brazilian Central Authority and is concluding his PhD in International Law, in which he examines Brazilian compliance, analyzing cases from 2002 to 2022 and interviewing other professionals who deal everyday with the problem. Meira shows what lies behind this procedural slowness, critically analyzing the culture of biased interpretation by procedural means. He also suggests good points for future changes in Brazilian Law. A compelling bestseller for students, undergraduate and graduate, treating core issues from a lawyer?s perspective. Rather than responding to child abduction with strict legal proceedings, the work argues that national solutions must be met, based on previous international experience. The Long and Winding Lawsuit is also a vade mecum for practitioners desiring a solid footing to make further enquiries on international child abduction in Brazil. This eye-opening book overlaps the lack of information on international abduction and explains the resilience of Brazilian Judiciary to comply with the conventional terms, suggesting what can be done to change this profile.
