Book Description
This is a Romeo and Juliet, West Side, love story, set in the South. A story of forbidden love between black and white. In the early 1970s the color of a person's skin was the first and most recognizable physical characteristic of an individual living in the Deep South, and it was understood in the society that black and white did not mix. How this young couple managed to survive the explosive racist emotions of those violent days is a tale that must be told! You cannot miss this! Indeed, these two young people never really expected to live to see this story to conclusion. What is truly amazing is the single fact that they managed to survive. The bullets missed their mark. The knives went awry. And the gangs could not discourage this warrior on a mission of love. It is a critical examination of American life and society in Texas. This is an inspiring tale! This story chronicles the history of how two people in love came to be together and stay together--against all odds. The raw emotions of love are exposed as these two young people journeyed through triumphs and tragedies. There was violent opposition at every turn. It was a test of will and fortitude. It is also a comedy that can only be appreciated now, in this day and age. It's a tale of overcoming the odds and winning. Moreover, we are the richer for it, for now we have this amazing story. This story is truly unbelievable, and yet, it happened.

Sito

Sito PDF Author: Laurence Ralph
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
ISBN: 1538740346
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 263

Book Description
A riveting and heart-wrenching story of violence, grief and the American justice system, exploring the systemic issues that perpetuate gang participation in one of the wealthiest cities in the country, through the story of one teenager. In September of 2019, Luis Alberto Quiñonez—known as Sito— was shot to death as he sat in his car in the Mission District of San Francisco. He was nineteen. His killer, Julius Williams, was seventeen. It was the second time the teens had encountered one another. The first, five years before, also ended in tragedy, when Julius watched as his brother was stabbed to death by an acquaintance of Sito’s. The two murders merited a few local news stories, and then the rest of the world moved on. But for the families of the slain teenagers, it was impossible to move on. And for Laurence Ralph, the stepfather of Sito’s half-brother who had dedicated much of his academic career to studying gang-affiliated youth, Sito’s murder forced him to revisit a subject of scholarly inquiry in a profoundly different, deeply personal way. Written from Ralph's perspective as both a person enmeshed in Sito's family and as an Ivy League professor and expert on the entanglement of class and violence, SITO is an intimate story with an message about the lived experience of urban danger, and about anger, fear, grief, vengeance, and ultimately grace.

Mechthild of Magdeburg

Mechthild of Magdeburg PDF Author: Mechthild
Publisher: DS Brewer
ISBN: 9780859917865
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
Mechthild of Magdeburg's The Flowing Light of the Godhead is one of the great surprises of German medieval literature. Compiled between c.1250 and c.1282, it is an extraordinary piece of imaginative writing. It integrates visions, auditions, dialogues, prayers, hymns, lyrical love poems, letters, allegories and parables, and draws creatively on features from hagiography, the disputation, the treatise, and magic spells, as the author documents her relationship with God and with her contemporaries. Within the context of German literary history, it is the first text in the tradition of mystical writing that was neither a translation nor a free adaptation of a Latin text, but rather an independent composition in the vernacular. Also of major significance is the fact that this text was written by a woman, thus offering insights into the cultural and social-historical context of the female religious (Mechthild lived her adult life as a beguine and latterly as a nun) in thirteenth-century northern Europe. Selections from the text are presented here in translation with introduction and notes. Dr Elizabeth A. Andersen teaches in the School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University.
