Book Description
A breath of fresh air when he was introduced to Test cricket on the Australian tour of 2001-02, Shane Bond gave New Zealand a rare fast-bowling option until his tragic defection to the rebel Indian Cricket League in 2008 ? a defection forced upon him, many believe, by the self-serving intransigence of New Zealand?s cricketing administrators. For a period of six years, Bond was one of the most feared bowlers in world cricket. The quickest New Zealander to reach 50 one-day international wickets, including a national best of 6 for 22 against Australia in the 2003 World Cup, his potential was only limited by his susceptibility to injury, having suffered crippling stress-fractures in his feet and back. His fast, inswinging yorker commanded the respect of the best batsmen in the game - but only when he's fit. He took 13 wickets at 9.23 against Zimbabwe in 2005, including 10 for 99 in the second Test at Bulawayo ? his first ten-wicket haul ? and in the process became the quickest among all New Zealand bowlers to get to 50 Test wickets, achieving the mark in only his 12th match.. His 5 for 23 in the first game of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in February 2007 augured well for Bond's second World Cup. He picked up 13 wickets in the tournament and finished as the most economical bowler. Signed up with the unsanctioned ICL T20 tournament in 2007 and was controversially precluded from representing New Zealand for 18 months. However, he severed his ties with the ICL in 2009 and was signed welcomed back to the international fold. Made a sensational return to test cricket in 2009 with a match-winning performance against Pakistan in Dunedin. Retired from test cricket after that match and from all international cricket after the 2010 T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Glorious Summers and Discontents

Glorious Summers and Discontents PDF Author: Mike Atherton
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 0857203509
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
In this fascinating book, Mike Atherton selects the best pieces he has written over the last decade. Renowned as a shrewd and resolute captain of England, Atherton moved effortlessly into the commentary box and Fleet Street, proving himself every bit as capable with the pen as with the bat. It has been a dramatic period, seeing the rise of Twenty20 cricket and the IPL, as well as the revival of England's prospects, breaking a long era of Australian dominance in the Ashes. There has also been controversy, too, with terrorist attacks, Zimbabwe and allegations of Pakistani spot-fixing all distracting fans from the essence of the game. Through it all, Atherton comments with the true insight of one who has been there, the humane understanding of someone who has genuine empathy for the issues involved and, above all, his opinions are based on a deep love for the game and sport in general. His writing has become essential reading for all sports fans. This book shows exactly why that is the case.

Cricket World Cup

Cricket World Cup PDF Author: Ashis Ray
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 9389000467
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
This is a riveting read for a cricket lover, especially an India fan. A remarkable, eye-witness history of the Cricket World Cup from an Indian perspective the book details the little-known story of India's turning point in one-day cricket in Guyana, when Kapil Dev's team in March 1983 beat the previously unassailable West Indies in their backyard. It also reminds readers of the tremor that was felt in the cricketing world when India repeated the success at Manchester in the World Cup 10 weeks later, before defeating the same side in the final two weeks later. It relives India's forgotten triumph in the 1985 World Championship and the rekindling of hope when Sourav Ganguly's team finished as runners-up in the 2003 World Cup. The book further depicts how MS Dhoni planned victory, together with Sachin Tendulkar inspiring Yuvraj Singh to perform at his best, in the 2011 tournament. The book is embellished by illuminating reports and scores on each India match and every semi-final and final in the World Cup since its inception. Finally, it discusses India's prospects in the 2019 World Cup.

Book Description
Other than a delicious root beer float and access to proper pizza, all Garth ‘Nickels’ N’Chalez wants is to see the creation of reality 2.0 happen. He already knows it's going to be bloody, rough and extremely trying, but when you sign up to be the Engineer of that new birth, you have very few choices regarding how it goes down. And when you've got the ancient, venerable and godlike Kith Antal leading an army of unstoppable Harmony soldiers coming at you with the express purposes of being the Victor.... You just can't help but feel it's gonna be even worse. But before Garth can even think about dealing with dear old dad, he's got to get inside Arcade City and deal with the so-called mad Goth king Blake. No one really knows what's under the gigantic clockwork dome that's lasted for thirty thousand years and Garth -not for a lack of trying to get proper Intel- finds himself doing what he does best. Which is basically charging in without thinking to see what happens next; forced to kill an innocent man in order to be sentenced to Arcade City for crimes against a King’s Son, Garth’s only information concerning the Domed, ancient city is that it is thirty thousand years old and filled to the brim with madness and chaos. The moment our hero steps through the Geared Doors leading into the fabled and storied Arcade City, Garth finds himself in –as usual- so far in over his head that his only choice is to push forward, ever forward. Inflicted with a terrible case of nanotech derived-Kingsblood poisoning, assaulted by fear, hunted by Gearmen, surrounded by hideously mutated gearheads and wardogs, saddled with an itinerant –and crankier than thou- blacksmith named Barnabas and balked at every turn, Garth begins the trek to Arcadia, wherein the Dark Iron King waits. Along the way, he and his reluctant companion seek to find a cure for Garth’s maladies, all while skirting dark resurgences of that thing the Engineer fears more than anything: Specter. Outside The Dome, the war for Trinity and It’s Armies does not go well; led by SpecSer Commander Aleksander Politoyov, his forces cannot get through the systemic shield created by Huey, and so he turns his attentions outwards. Employing the resourceful –and uncannily insightful- Tendreel Salingh to discover Garth N’Chalez’ true plans, Aleksander unwittingly sets into motion a series of events that will spiral wildly out of control. Herrig, now Chairman of the renamed Latelyspace Commonwealth, is assaulted on all sides. When Garth escaped the confines of Hospitalis aboard Bravo, the shield protecting Latelyspace from invasion dropped just long enough for him to escape, but also for a handful of Trinity’s forces to sneak in. His system is plagued by Heavy Elites, Specter Techs, and regular Army, and the original Horsemen are chomping at the bit to rain wrack and ruin upon everyone and everything that stands in their way. All this and more awaits. The Unreal Universe gears up for the end and everything is quite literally going to Hell in a hand basket. Will Garth survive Arcade City? Against the mighty Dark Iron King and his even mightier King’s Will … well. Garth will need to bring his ‘A’ Game… Won’t he just?

Book Description
A horrible terrorist strike…referred to as Operation Deadly Rainby the al-Qa’eda …is about to be launched against the United States during the holiday season, with perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives at stake. An artificial intelligence program is nearly completed that might predict in advance when, where, and how this attack might occur. When the CIA receives fragmentary warnings of the upcoming attack, the university researchers secretly developing this program…called “StarSight”…are abruptly plucked from their comfortable academic posts and thrust into the frontline of the war on terrorism. The stage is set for savage conflict: Professor Tony Shane, his beautiful research associate, Sarah, and a handful of university co-workers are condemned by their academic colleagues for conducting a secret project for the CIA. At the same time, they are exposed to deadly attempts by terrorist agents to sabotage their work. Unknown to the CIA and Senator Moorhouse, who is coordinating the StarSight project, the person responsible for Deadly Rain…and ruthlessly attempting to terminate StarSight … is himself a wealthy and respected American citizen and close friend of the Senator and his wife. With political intrigue permeating university and government circles alike, this adventure takes the reader from the comfort of the “halls of ivy” to the exotic settings of San Francisco, Zurich, Washington, and the Italian Riviera. Despite the personal trials of the researchers, politicians, and terrorists that unfold during this pre-holiday period, the purposeful efforts of the StarSight team to prevent the terrorist attack build to a heart-stopping climax.

The Watchers

The Watchers PDF Author: Shane Harris
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101195746
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
Using exclusive access to key insiders, Shane Harris charts the rise of America's surveillance state over the past twenty-five years and highlights a dangerous paradox: Our government's strategy has made it harder to catch terrorists and easier to spy on the rest of us. Our surveillance state was born in the brain of Admiral John Poindexter in 1983. Poindexter, Reagan's National Security Advisor, realized that the United States might have prevented the terrorist massacre of 241 Marines in Beirut if only intelligence agencies had been able to analyze in real time data they had on the attackers. Poindexter poured government know-how and funds into his dream-a system that would sift reams of data for signs of terrorist activity. Decades later, that elusive dream still captivates Washington. After the 2001 attacks, Poindexter returned to government with a controversial program, called Total Information Awareness, to detect the next attack. Today it is a secretly funded operation that can gather personal information on every American and millions of others worldwide. But Poindexter's dream has also become America's nightmare. Despite billions of dollars spent on this digital quest since the Reagan era, we still can't discern future threats in the vast data cloud that surrounds us all. But the government can now spy on its citizens with an ease that was impossible-and illegal-just a few years ago. Drawing on unprecedented access to the people who pioneered this high-tech spycraft, Harris shows how it has shifted from the province of right- wing technocrats to a cornerstone of the Obama administration's war on terror. Harris puts us behind the scenes and in front of the screens where twenty-first-century spycraft was born. We witness Poindexter quietly working from the private sector to get government to buy in to his programs in the early nineties. We see an army major agonize as he carries out an order to delete the vast database he's gathered on possible terror cells-and on thousands of innocent Americans-months before 9/11. We follow General Mike Hayden as he persuades the Bush administration to secretly monitor Americans based on a flawed interpretation of the law. After Congress publicly bans the Total Information Awareness program in 2003, we watch as it is covertly shifted to a "black op," which protects it from public scrutiny. When the next crisis comes, our government will inevitably crack down on civil liberties, but it will be no better able to identify new dangers. This is the outcome of a dream first hatched almost three decades ago, and The Watchers is an engrossing, unnerving wake-up call.

Book Description
DCI Hennessey and Sgt. Yellich return in “a cleverly plotted, absorbing yarn that crime-fiction readers will savor” from the author of The Altered Case (Booklist). When four postcards are sent anonymously to the staff of an advice center, each with the word “murder” scribbled in a foreign language and the same precise map coordinates, the police are called. DCI Hennessey of the Vale of York police and his team of detectives visit the sinister location and make a chilling discovery: the body of a professional man who had been reported missing ten years earlier. Who sent the postcards, and why so long after the crime? As Hennessey and his team investigate—uncovering more past murders, a case of local authority corruption and two manipulative wives keen to gift-wrap their husbands as murderers in order to benefit financially from their estates—they find themselves drawn into a puzzling and dangerous investigation. “An elegantly constructed plot and a sly ending . . . Fans of contemporary British police procedurals will be satisfied.” —Publishers Weekly “DCI George Hennessey must rely on his team of Webster, Pharoah, Ventnor and Yellich to show their characteristic persistence in tracking a killer whose crimes are as devious as they are far-flung . . . their professional skills are worth your time.” —Kirkus Reviews
