Book Description
Excerpt from Shade in Coffee Culture The shading Of coffee is one of the vexed questions of tropical agri culture, and the literature of the subject abounds in opinions Of the most contradictory import. By som'e shade is condemned as always and everywhere hurtful, while others insist with equal emphasis that it is a necessity for the healthy growth and productiveness of the coffee tree. Some experts admit a limited use Of shade at low altitudes and in regions subject to drought, while others insist that coffee can not be profitably cultivated where shade is necessary. A favorite argument for shade is the greater longevity Of the trees, but this is answered by the assertion of greatly decreased productiveness. The occasion of the present bulletin is the attainment of the belief that the above arguments and others noticed in detail below are based, when they have any rational justification, On local conditions merely, and do not represent facts or principles of general application in the culture of coffee. To ascribe to the shade itself the effects of fertility imparted to the soil by the roots of leguminous shade trees is a natural and by no means unique error of judgment; but it is, nevertheless, somewhat surprising that this primary cause Of so many contrary opinions should not have been apprehended long ago. A Guide to Intensive Coffee Culture (Classic Reprint)

A Guide to Intensive Coffee Culture (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Jose Vicente-Chandler

Book Description
Excerpt from A Guide to Intensive Coffee Culture The sudden removal of all shade from old coffee plantations may be disastrous, as shown by two experiments conducted by the au thors. Although the coffee trees were heavily fertilized and well cared for, they produced only one good crop and then became nu thrifty and yielded little. Old coffee trees may gradually become acclimated to strong sunlight, but it is best to start with new plant ings and to care for them properly. It should be emphasized that shading is just one of the practices involved in coffee culture. The other recommended practices for intensive coffee culture are the same whether the plantation is grown in full sunlight or under light shade. God in a Cup

God in a Cup PDF Author: Michaele Weissman
Publisher: HMH
ISBN: 0544186613
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Follow the ultimate coffee geeks on their worldwide hunt for the best beans. Can a cup of coffee reveal the face of God? Can it become the holy grail of modern-day knights errant who brave hardship and peril in a relentless quest for perfection? Can it change the world? These questions are not rhetorical. When highly prized coffee beans sell at auction for $50, $100, or $150 a pound wholesale (and potentially twice that at retail), anything can happen. In God in a Cup, journalist and late-blooming adventurer Michaele Weissman treks into an exotic and paradoxical realm of specialty coffee where the successful traveler must be part passionate coffee connoisseur, part ambitious entrepreneur, part activist, and part Indiana Jones. Her guides on the journey are the nation’s most heralded coffee business hotshots: Counter Culture’s Peter Giuliano, Intelligentsia’s Geoff Watts, and Stumptown’s Duane Sorenson. With their obsessive standards and fiercely competitive baristas, these roasters are creating a new culture of coffee connoisseurship in America—a culture in which $10 lattes are both a purist’s pleasure and a way to improve the lives of third-world farmers. If you love a good cup of coffee—or a great adventure story—you’ll love this unprecedented up-close look at the people and passions behind today’s best beans. “Weissman illustrates how the origin, flavor compounds and socioeconomic impact of a cup of coffee are relevant now more than ever. . . . Tagging along behind the main characters in today’s specialty coffee scene, [she] travels from the exotic to the expected to artfully deconstruct the connoisseur’s cup of coffee.” —Publishers Weekly

Publisher: Assouline Publishing
ISBN: 1614289522
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 6

Book Description
Considered by many as the country’s most dynamic, fastest growing and sexiest city, Miami is more popular than ever before. Yet, it is a city that doesn’t merely change but evolves, never rewriting the past, just adding to its illustrious heritage. And this is the real beauty of Miami. The chic Surf Club and the vibrant Faena Hotel did not replace the emblematic Raleigh of the 1940s nor the Ritz Carlton of the 50s, rather they complement them. Classics like Joe’s Stone Crab continue to serve their signature fare to sell-out crowds each night, as new establishments attract with name chefs. The iconic art deco architecture remains on full display as the modern Herzog & de Meuron-designed Perez Art Museum stands in stark contrast. Replete with arts and culture year round from the international art at The Bass to the street art of Wynwood Walls, each December, the city is taken over by the global cultural elite for Art Basel Miami Beach, a fair that attracts over 80,000 visitors who turn out for the momentous art, such as Maurizio Cattelan’s show stopping “Comedian”, and the exuberant festivities hosted each evening.
