Shackles of Iron

Shackles of Iron PDF Author: Stewart Gordon
Publisher: Hackett Publishing
ISBN: 1624664768
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
"Gordon's survey of the topic makes it clear that slavery in the Americas can be understood much better if we put it in this larger context, in terms of both time and place. His chapters on East African and Mediterranean slavery are especially valuable, since these were contemporary with so-called Atlantic slavery and can provide students with valid points of comparison, revealing both the similarities and the variable nature of early-modern bondage. The final chapter is especially timely, reminding readers that much of what we think of as enslavement hasn't really gone away, but simply slipped below the radar of the world media. All in all, Gordon makes it clear that, though it has arisen in different guises and at many different times and places, slavery has been and remains deeply rooted in human society. A rewarding introduction for anyone looking to better understand slavery as a world-wide institution." —Robert Davis, The Ohio State University

Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 76

Book Description
Have you ever heard the old saying, 'A mind is a terrible thing to waste'? What if everything you have been told, taught and made to believe is all just another form of slavery called brainwashing? Small white lies that have imprisoned a whole race of people to believe they are free. Invisible Shackles is the key we have been searching for to free our minds. Marshall has discovered the truth hidden for years from mental brainwashing. Racism did not die with the civil rights movement nor did it die when many great black leaders gave their lives up for change. Racism merely changed forms from the iron shackles on our wrist and ankles to the invisible shackles on our brains. Marshall powerful words gives readers the knowledge, courage and key to set ourselves free.

The Law of Possession

The Law of Possession PDF Author: William Sturman Sax
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019027574X
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
Rituals combining healing with spirit possession and court-like proceedings are found around the world and throughout history. For example, a person suffers from an illness that cannot be cured, and in order to be healed he performs a ritual involving prosecution and defense, a judge and witnesses. Divine beings give evidence through human oracles, spirits possess their human victims and are exorcized, and local gods intervene to provide healing and justice. Such practices seem to be the very antithesis of modernity and many modern, secular states have systematically attempted to eliminate them. Why are such rituals largely absent from modern societies, and what happens to them when the state attempts to expunge them from their health and justice systems, or even to criminalize them? Despite the prevalence of rituals involving some or all of these elements, The Law of Possession represents the first attempt to compare and analyze them systematically. The volume brings together historical and contemporary case studies from East Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and argues that, despite consistent attempts by states to discourage, eliminate, and criminalize them, such rituals persist and even thrive because they meet widespread human needs.
