The Urban and Regional Dimension of the Crisis

The Urban and Regional Dimension of the Crisis PDF Author: Comisión Europea. Dirección General de Políticas Regionales
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789279311291
Category : European Union countries
Languages : en
Pages : 48

Book Description
In 2014, the cohesion policy programming period will start in the aftermath of the worst recession of the last 50 years. The crisis has reversed the process of convergence of regional GDP per head and unemployment within the EU. The challenge now is to ensure a prompt return to a strong growth path, especially in the less developed regions and cities. To support the forthcoming programme negotiations, this report highlights the crisis-induced changes that will affect the context and priorities of the new programmes. The report first sets the scene with an overview of the main developments at national level. It then looks at the impact of the crisis on regions and cities and the growing disparities. Finally, it outlines how the changed economic environment will affect the future cohesion programmes and underlines the need for a strong thematic concentration. This report follows the 7th progress report, published in 2010, and will be followed by the publication of the 6th cohesion report in 2014. The 6th cohesion report will also cover issues such innovation, climate and environment, which could not be included here.

Book Description
European societies and economies continue to rely on Services of General Interest (SGI) to produce legitimacy. In the light of postmodern societies, demographic aging, migratory patterns, globalization and economic crises territorially sensitive challenges arise and targeted solutions are needed accordingly.

Geographies of Growth

Geographies of Growth PDF Author: Charlie Karlsson
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 1785360604
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
Today we can observe an increasing spatial divide as some large urban regions and many more medium-sized and small regions face growing problems such as decreasing labour demand, increasing unemployment and an ageing population. In view of these trends, this book offers a better understanding of the general characteristics and specific drivers of the geographies of growth. It shows how these may vary in different spatial contexts, how hurdles and barriers to growth in different types of regions can be dealt with, how and to what extent resources in different areas can develop, and how the potential of these resources to stimulate growth can be realized.

Territorial Cohesion

Territorial Cohesion PDF Author: Eduardo Medeiros
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030033864
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive overview of several urban related aspects that are of central importance to successful territorial cohesion processes. In essence, it sheds new light on issues concerning urban polycentrism, functional urban regions, integrated sustainable urban development, and the EU Urban Agenda; and on how they can help to achieve territorial cohesion policy goals. As an elusive and fairly recent concept, territorial cohesion has to date only been vaguely debated in the available literature, which for the most part focuses on its historical origins and its relevance for EU policymaking. Instead, this book synthesizes, for the first time, a range of perspectives that place urban elements and policies at the core of territorial cohesion analysis. As such, and given the fact that territorial cohesion is a holistic concept, the book will appeal to a broad readership from both the academic and policymaking arenas.
