Book Description
William Taylor (1821-1902) was a Methodist minister specializing in "street preaching" in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., when the Methodist church sent him to California as a missionary evangelist in 1849. He remained in the West for seven years, going on to become one of the church's most tireless worldwide evangelists. He later conducted crusades in Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa. In 1884 he was named Missionary Bishop for Africa and he focused his energies on missionary activities on that continent. Taylor spent his last years in California, the site of his first mission. Seven years' street preaching in San Francisco (1857) offers Taylor's memoirs of his career in the West, concentrating on open-air evangelism in general and experiences on the street corners of San Francisco and Sacramento and in camp-meetings in the mine fields, 1849-1856. The book focuses on the nature of the sinners who repented at Taylor's words: drunkards, gamblers, seamen; and on the moral and political depravity of San Francisco that culminated in the creation of the Vigilance Committee. For a second installment of Taylor's memoirs, see California life illustrated (1858).

Book Description
Excerpt from Seven Years' Street Preaching in San Francisco, California: Embracing Incidents, Triumphant Death Scenes, Etc This book was written in California, and hence nearly all its subjects and illustrative scenes are Californian; but it comes so near to the real life in human nature, which, with its varieties, is the same everywhere, and it shows' by so many life-examples the perfect adaptation of the Gospel to humanity, that I think it quite unnecessary to make any altera. Book Description
There was a constant stream of emigration flowing in through our "golden gate" from every part of the world. In 1848, William Taylor, one of Methodism's foremost pioneers in 19th century missions work, was called to California. He settled in the burgeoning metropolis of San Francisco and quickly became a prolific open-air preacher, church planter and reformer in the "land of gold and crime." In this magnificent account, Taylor's unvarnished, vibrant, and immediate first-hand narrative chronicles the throes of a global city in its formative years. Feigning eloquence for directness, Taylor's tour through "the streets and lanes," and "highways and hedges" brims with local flavor while his sketches and vignettes detail the old west just as it was; filled with a wild, newfound freedom yet deeply in need of the gospel's reforming influence. Amid the fires, duels, steamship disasters and gold rush, his stalwart influence through street evangelism shows us at once the power of a preacher keenly in tune with the needs of his people and the rousing power inherent in God's word. Seven Years' stands mightily as one of Americana's most galvanizing religious literary timepieces, and now, in this new edition, it is available for a new generation of readers.
