Serial Offenders

Serial Offenders PDF Author: Louis B. Schlesinger
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420039009
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
Although serial offenders have been a recognized problem in society for centuries, only recently have the complexities of these individuals come to light. Serial Offenders: Current Thought, Recent Findings presents current and inclusive information on serial offending in a clear and straightforward manner. Citing numerous case examples, this book will provide forensic psychologists and psychologists, as well as criminologists, social workers and corrections officials with relevant and informative data. Author Louis B. Schlesinger presents current thinking on serial offenders in the first of three parts contained in the text. In Part I, he covers serial homicide, child molestation, rape, arson, and the nonviolent serial offender, while offering new information and perspectives on these traditional problems. Part II reverses thought, and takes a look at recent clinical and research findings. From profiling by law-enforcement and health-care workers to the neurobiological approach to understanding why people continually commit these crimes, Part II delves beyond right and wrong to illuminate and identify the many shades of gray. Part III focuses on the unusual aspects of serial offending and on special populations of offenders. From infantophilia to serial offending by females, adolescents and members of the clergy, Schlesinger provides insight into a world that few have witnessed in such a comprehensive manner.

Sighted Sub, Sank Same

Sighted Sub, Sank Same PDF Author: Alan C. Carey
Publisher: Casemate
ISBN: 1612007848
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
A historian examines the U.S. Navy’s efforts to stop Axis forces from attacking Allied merchant ships providing supplies during World War II. During the Second World War, a battle was waged to cut the lifeline of food and armaments sailing across the Atlantic from North America. It evolved into a far-ranging conflict beyond the North Atlantic and the eastern seaboard of the United States. It covered the frigid waters off Iceland down to the warm waters of Florida, through the Caribbean Sea, across the ocean to the Bay of Biscay, the Mediterranean Sea, down to Africa, and across the South Atlantic to Brazil’s southern tip. Nazi Germany’s efforts to deny supplies from reaching Europe came at a high price, losing 783 U-boats and approximately 30,000 men between 1939 and 1945, with land and carrier-based naval air units sinking 83 German submarines of the 159 sunk by American aircraft. Axis forces saw their submarines targeted as well in the Atlantic, with Imperial Japanese submarine I-52 and the Italian Archimede falling victim to American naval aircraft armed with depth bombs or acoustic homing torpedoes. All the dramatic action is captured in Sighted Sub, Sank Same. This book contains over 200 color and black and white photographs, as well as personal interviews, interrogation reports, personal correspondence, and after-action reports, weaving a fascinating history about the naval air campaign in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean Theaters during World War II. Praise for Sighted Sub, Sank Same “Richly illustrates the navy’s battle for the Atlantic from the air.” —The National WWII Museum “Gives the reader a real feeling of that relentless hunt.” —Baird Maritime

Tackling Rape Culture: Ending Patriarchy

Tackling Rape Culture: Ending Patriarchy PDF Author: Jan Jordan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100060585X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
In Tackling Rape Culture: Ending Patriarchy, Jan Jordan asks why, despite decades of feminist activism, does rape culture remain so endemic within contemporary society. She argues that, in order to understand the global pandemic of sexual violence, we must view rape culture as a consequence of the social divisiveness that emerges from the logic of patriarchy. In advancing this argument, Jordan offers a comprehensive indictment of the patriarchal system while recognising also women’s efforts to resist its edicts. Jordan critically explores two mechanisms that she argues are central to the maintenance and reproduction of rape culture - silencing and objectification. Both are examined as patriarchal strategies that have been relied on for centuries to control and constrain women’s lives, silencing their voices and keeping them as ‘othered’ outsiders in a male-defined world. Women throughout history have sought ways to resist such control and, since the second-wave women’s movement of the 1970s, this has included multiple initiatives both offline and more recently online. While #MeToo is being hailed by many as evidence that the silencing of women’s voices about rape has finally been broken, Jordan urges a more critical appraisal given the continued dominance of patriarchal thinking. To end rape culture, Jordan argues, we must end patriarchy. This timely and provocative book, which complements Jordan’s Women, Rape and Justice: Unravelling the Rape Conundrum (Routledge, 2022), will be of great interest to researchers, students, practitioners and activists seeking to understand and challenge the pervasive rape culture characterising contemporary patriarchal society.
