Buried explosions in salt domes generate seismic waves and fracture the medium in the region around the detonation. Results indicate that the mechanics and dynamics of fracturing are not quantitatively well known in detail. Seismic waves can be used to delineate the structural configuration of a salt dome. A continuous velocity log shows that the velocity in the salt is constant, while the velocity in the surrounding sediments varies with depth. It is suggested that the connection of salt domes with a single mother salt bed at depth may be tested by using the velocity contrast between the salt and sediments. Significant decoupling effects, obtained by detonating a chemical explosive in an underground spherical cavity, are examined. It is concluded that proper equations of motions are already known, and theoretical computed waveforms are in very good agreement with experimental results. The decoupling factor is a function of frequency. Information obtained from the chemical explosion indicates that similar favorable results seem possible for nuclear explosions. (Author).

The report is carried out by the Institute for Dynamics of the Geospheres, Russian Academy of Sciences under contract NB280344 with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of California. The work includes investigation of seismic waves generation and propagation from Soviet peaceful underground nuclear explosions in salt based on the data from temporary and permanent seismic stations. The explosions were conducted at the sites Azgir and Vega within the territory of the Caspian depression of the Russian platform. The data used were obtained in the following conditions of conduction: epicentral distance range from 0 to 60 degrees, yields from 1 to 65 kt and depths of burial from 160 to 1500 m.

This report analyzes an experiment designed to test the theory of seismic decoupling of underground explosives proposed by Latter LeLevier, Martinelli, and McMillan STA1959!. The theory calculates the amplitude of a l.7- kt nuclear explosive in a hole in salt and compares it to the measured value of the 1.7-kt Rainier shot in tuff at the same distance. A decoupling factor of about 300 resulted. The experiment, called Cowboy, was designed to test the decoupling principle by carrying out a series of eight highexplosive shots in two spheres made in a salt dome and nine tamped shots for comparison purposes. The seismic data reported were obtained primarily at 14,000 and 22,000 ft from the shot at frequencies of lO to 30 cps. A salt-to-salt decoupling factor of 100 was obtained which is consistent with the predicted 300 tuff-to-salt factor. When the sphere was over-driven so that the walls did not move elastically (a condition which violates the theory), decoupling factors of 10 and 30 were measured. The report interprets the seismic data to give the dependence of decoupling on the varions parameters of the experiment. The decoupling deduced from measurements made 80 ft from the shot points is found to be oonsistent with teat deduced from the measurements at 14,000 and 12,000 ft. (auth).
