Author: Stephen Brown
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 0557696445
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 103
Book Description
The author is a lifelong endurance sports enthusiast, triathlon coach, husband, father, and leukemia survivor. What lies ahead are a few of his thoughts on life, on health, on sport and on some of the amazing people who have reached and touched him along the way. The title "In Search of Center" stems from an email from a friend begging the question "How can I find my center if I don't visit my edges?" Those words have stuck with Brown and they remind him that perhaps writing also gives him an opportunity to both visit the edges, and find his own center. Foreword written by Ethan Zohn.

The Left in Search of a Center
Author: Michael Crozier
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 9780252064975
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
Does leftist political thought have a future? American liberalism is being marginalized, European socialism is exhausted, and cultural radicalism has become little more than a sideshow. Contributors to The Left in Search of a Center probe questions of how political community can be imagined and constituted in the contemporary world. Together, they make it apparent that the still-emerging idea of political community is anchored in the pluralistic and cross-cultural nature of late twentieth-century Western societies

Searching for Dark Matter with Cosmic Gamma Rays
Author: Andrea Albert
Publisher: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
ISBN: 1681742705
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 82
Book Description
Searching for Dark Matter with Cosmic Gamma Rays summarizes the evidence for dark matter and what we can learn about its particle nature using cosmic gamma rays. It has almost been 100 years since Fritz Zwicky first detected hints that most of the matter in the Universe that doesn't directly emit or reflect light. Since then, the observational evidence for dark matter has continued to grow. Dark matter may be a new kind of particle that is governed by physics beyond our Standard Model of particle physics. In many models, dark matter annihilation or decay produces gamma rays. There are a variety of instruments observing the gamma-ray sky from tens of MeV to hundreds of TeV. Some make deep, focused observations of small regions, while others provide coverage of the entire sky. Each experiment offers complementary sensitivity to dark matter searches in a variety of target sizes, locations, and dark matter mass scales. We review results from recent gamma-ray experiments including anomalies some have attributed to dark matter. We also discuss how our gamma-ray observations complement other dark matter searches and the prospects for future experiments.

Multitasking: Executive Functioning in Dual-Task and Task Switching Situations
Author: Tilo Strobach
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2889454533
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
Multitasking refers to performance of multiple tasks. The most prominent types of multitasking are situations including either temporal overlap of the execution of multiple tasks (i.e., dual tasking) or executing multiple tasks in varying sequences (i.e., task switching). In the literature, numerous attempts have aimed at theorizing about the specific characteristics of executive functions that control interference between simultaneously and/or sequentially active component of task-sets in these situations. However, these approaches have been rather vague regarding explanatory concepts (e.g., task-set inhibition, preparation, shielding, capacity limitation), widely lacking theories on detailed mechanisms and/ or empirical evidence for specific subcomponents. The present research topic aims at providing a selection of contributions on the details of executive functioning in dual-task and task switching situations. The contributions specify these executive functions by focusing on (1) fractionating assumed mechanisms into constituent subcomponents, (2) their variations by age or in clinical subpopulations, and/ or (3) their plasticity as a response to practice and training.
