Book Description
According to the Big Bang Theory, matter and antimatter were produced in equal amounts at the beginning. Over time the antimatter disappeared, leaving galactic struc- tures composed only of matter. Therefore, there is some process in nature that proceeds at different rates for matter and antimatter due to the violation of the CP symmetry. CP violation has been observed in strange and bottom quark meson decays. However, a direct CP violation is predicted in the? lepton sector. Specifically, the charge asymmetry due to CP violation in the decay?????K0S (? 0?0)?? is predicted to be (+0.33 ± 0.01)%. In this work the charge asymmetry of the decay?????K0S (? 0?0) v? is measured using a dataset of 437 million? lepton pairs collected by the BABAR experiment at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The charge asymmetry induced by CP violation is found to be A = ( -0.45 ± 0.24 ± 0.11) %, consistent with prediction.

Book Description
I report the recent searches for CP violation in? and D decays including a K{sub s}° in the final state. The analyses herein shown are based on data samples recorded by BABAR and Belle experiments. A brief introduction on CP violation is followed by the summary of the experimental techniques and the results obtained for? and D decays, respectively. Finally, an outlook on future development is provided.

Book Description
We report a search for CP violation in the decay?− →?−K{sub S}°({>=} 0?°)?{sub?} using a dataset of 437 million {tau} lepton pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 476 fb−1, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy ee− storage rings. The CP-violating decay-rate asymmetry is determined to be ( -0.45 ± 0.24 ± 0.11)%, approximately three standard deviations from the Standard Model prediction of (0.33 ± 0.01)%.

A sample of {tau}{sup {+-}} {yields} K*{sup {+-}} decays with K*{sup {+-}} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} and K{sub S}{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, using 123.4 fb{sup -1} of data collected by the BaBar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, is used to search for a direct CP violation effect in the charged Higgs sector. No evidence of CP violation is found and the imaginary part of the charged Higgs coupling, {l_brace}Im{r_brace}({Lambda}), in the Multi-Higgs-Doublet-Model is found to be at -0.284

Book Description
We present the search for the lepton flavour violating decay [tau] → lK°{sub s} with the BaBar experiment data. This process and many other lepton flavour violating [tau] decays, like [tau] → [mu][gamma] and [tau] → lll, are one of the most promising channel to search for evidence of new physics. According to the Standard Model and the neutrino mixing parameters, branching fractions are estimated well below 10−14, but many models of new physics allow for branching fractions values close to the present experimental sensitivity. This analysis is based on a data sample of 469fb−1 collected by BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring from 1999 to 2007, equivalent to 431 millions of [tau] pairs. the BABAR experiment, initially designed for studying CP violation in B mesons, has demonstrated to be one of the most suitable environments for studying [tau] decays. The tracking system, the calorimeter and the particle identification of BABAR, together with the knowledge of the [tau] initial energy, allow an extremely powerful rejection of background events that, for this analysis, is better than 10−9. Being [tau] → lK°{sub s} a decay mode without neutrinos, the signal [tau] decay can be fully reconstructed. Kinematical constraints are used in a fit that provides a decay tree reconstruction with a high resolution. For this analysis MC simulated events play a decisive role for estimating the signal efficiency and study the residual background. High statistics MC sample are produced simulating detector conditions for different periods of data collection, in order to reduce any discrepancies with the data. When discrepancies can not be removed, we perform studies to compute a correction factor or an estimation of systematic errors that need to be included in the final measurement. A significant improvement of the current result can be reached only with a higher statistics and, therefore, with a new collider providing a luminosity from 10 to 100 times more than PEP-II. A new detector, with improved performance and able to collect data in a high background environment, is also requested to fully exploit the capability of such amount of data. In fact, only keeping the efficiency and the background as similar as possible to present ones, we will be able to scale almost linearly the estimated upper limit according to the luminosity. The strong potential of improvement for the search of lepton flavour violation [tau] decays makes the building of such a machine highly desirable.

Book Description
Our current understanding of the fundamental building blocks of the Universe, summarised by the Standard Model of particle physics, is incomplete. For example, it fails to explain why we do not see equal, or almost equal, numbers of particles and their antiparticle partners. To explain this asymmetry requires, among other effects, a mechanism known as charge-parity (CP) violation that causes differences between the rates at which particles and antiparticles decay. CP violation is seen in systems containing bottom and strange quarks, but not in those with up, charm or top quarks. This thesis describes searches for particle-antiparticle asymmetries in the decay rates of charmed mesons. No evidence of CP violation is found. With current sensitivities, an asymmetry large enough to observe probably could not be explained by the Standard Model. Instead an explanation could come from new physics, for example contributions from supersymmetric or other undiscovered heavy particles. In the thesis, the development of new techniques to search for these asymmetries is described. They are applied to data from the LHCb experiment at CERN to make precise measurements of asymmetries in the D^+->K^-K^+pi^+ decay channel. This is the most promising charged D decay for CP violation searches.

Book Description
With over 300 million B-Bbar pairs delivered by the PEP-II B-factory, and over 200 publications, the Babar experiment has studied a very broad range of B, charm, tau, and QCD topics. In fact, the physics at Babar is so wide-ranging that it threatens to overwhelm any summary. Instead, in this colloquium I will focus on just a few topics selected for their potential to find a truly unexpected result. These include CP violation in rare B decays, leptonic B decays, and lepton-flavor violating tau decays. Each measurement, the currently predicted result, and the potential for uncovering the unexpected now and into the future, will be gently, but thoroughly, described.
