Scotch Plains and Fanwood

Scotch Plains and Fanwood PDF Author: Richard Bousquet
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738563183
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
This wonderful new book contains more than 200 fascinating photographs, maps, and prints and brings to life the people, places, and events which have defined Scotch Plains and Fanwood over the centuries. These images invite us to explore the area's rich history from the time of its first settlement, in 1684, to the present day. Scotch Plains and Fanwood were originally one community, also encompassing the area now known as Feltville or Glenside Park. From the beginning, the region played a critical role in American history. The Battle of the Short Hills, from June 14 to June 30, 1777, between the British under General Howe and the Revolutionary Army under George Washington, took place here. During the nineteenth century, Scotch Plains became an important stop on the "Swift Sure" stage line between New York and Philadelphia. As New York City burgeoned during the nineteenth century and the railroad arrived in Central New Jersey, Scotch Plains and Fanwood became a bedroom community of the metropolis. Finally, in 1895, Fanwood was chartered independently. Later, Feltville became part of the Union County Park System.

Urban Lichens

Urban Lichens PDF Author: Jessica L. Allen
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300252994
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
A practical field guide to the common lichens found in the northeastern megalopolis, including New York City, Toronto, Boston/New Haven, Philadelphia, Baltimore/Washington, D.C., and as far west as Chicago Lichens are dynamic, symbiotic organisms formed by close cooperation between fungi and algae. There are over 20,000 identified species performing essential ecosystem services worldwide. Extremely sensitive to air pollution, they have returned to cities from which they were absent for decades until the air became cleaner. This guide is the first to introduce urban naturalists to over 60 of the common lichens now found in cities and urban areas throughout northeastern North America--in parks and schoolyards, on streets, and in open spaces. Divided into three sections -- lichen basics, including their biology, chemistry, morphology, and role in human history; species accounts and descriptions; and an illustrated glossary, index, and references for further reading -- the book aims to connect city dwellers and visitors with the natural world around them. The descriptions, exquisite photographs, and line drawings will enable users to enter the hidden world of lichens.

The Big She-Bang

The Big She-Bang PDF Author: Marisa Acocella
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0063073757
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
One of O Magazine’s Best Books of Fall 2020 One of Comics Beat’s Most Anticipated Graphic Novels for Fall 2020 Writing as if in a fever dream, iconic New Yorker cartoonist Marisa Acocella channels God the Mother and all of the goddesses, saints and sinners, and real-life women from our storied past in this epic retelling that begins with the Big She-Bang. The rest, as they say, is herstory. Hilarious, profound, and (at times) profane, The Big She-Bang is virtuosic storytelling in which the rules are bent back to where they should have started in the first place. It is abundantly clear that the past has been recorded in big books “written by a bunch of men about a bunch of men.” Now Acocella challenges our understanding of humanity’s past with her own Big Book. Narrated by God the Mother, The Big She-Bang celebrates the Shevolutionaries: a goddess roster that includes Eve, the Marys (Virgin Mother and Magdalene), Persephone, Sophia, Isis, Pope Joan, the Suffragettes, Gloria Steinem, Tarana Burke, Malala, and more. By Klieg-lighting the ways women have been erased, vilified, and dominated across eons—blamed for original sin, destruction, betrayal, witchery, and other assorted (and false) evils and ills—Acocella sets the story straight from the beginning of time to the present day. Not to be exclusionary, this new herstory features cameos from Yaldabaoth, Zeus, Noah, and the Rapacious Phalluses on the rampage. In the end, what hangs in the balance is nothing less than the future of humanity and Mother Earth herself.

Fanwood

Fanwood PDF Author:
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738535906
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Fanwood is a tribute to a town of strong leaders, proud homeowners, committed volunteers, and successful businesspeople. With some two hundred select photographs dating from the 1770s to the 1990s, it illustrates the community's desire to grow yet maintain a consistency of appearance and character. Fanwood developed because the Jersey Central Railroad brought city dwellers to this vacation spot to escape the heat of the city and enjoy the shade and quiet. Among the town's notables are George Kyte, known as the father of Fanwood; Patricia Kuran, the first woman mayor of Fanwood; and the Boucher family, founders of the Homestead, a popular hotel.
