The Rise of Baptist Republicanism

The Rise of Baptist Republicanism PDF Author: Oran P Smith
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814788963
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 486

Book Description
A Choice Outstanding Academic Book By championing the ideals of independence, evangelism, and conservism, the Southern Baptist Covention (SBC) has grown into the largest Protestant denomination in the country. The Convention's mass democratic form of church government, its influential annual meetings, and its sheer size have made it a barometer for Southern political and cultural shift. Its most recent shift has been starboard-toward fundamentalism and Republicanism. While the Convention once ofered a happy home to Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, and church-state separationists, in the past two decades the SBC has become an uncomfortable institution for Democrats, progressive theologians, and other moderate voices. Current SBC member-heroes include Senators Trent Lott and Jesse Helms. Despite this seeming marginalization, Southern Baptist politicians have grown from political obscurity to occupying the four highest positions in the constitutional order of succesion to the presidency. President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Senate President pro-tempore Strom Thurmond, and House Speaker Newt Gingrich are all Southern Baptists. In its emerging Republicanism, the SBC has taken on characteristics of its more active fellow travelers in the Christian Right, forging alliances with former enemies (African Americans amd Roman Catholics), playing presidential politics, establishing a Washington lobbying presence, working the political grassroots, and declaring war on Walt Disney. Each of these missions has been accomplished with calculating political precision. The Rise of Baptist Republicanism traces the Republicanization of the SBC's Republicanism in the context of the rise of the Fundamentalist Right and the emergence of a Republican majority in the South. Describing the SBC's political roots, Oran P. Smith contrasts Baptist Republicans with the rest of the Christian Right while revealing the theological, cultural, and historical factors which have made Southern Baptists receptive to Republican/Fundamentalist Right influences. The book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the intersection of religion and politics in America today.

Evangelical Bible Doctrine

Evangelical Bible Doctrine PDF Author: Dr. Keith Sherlin
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1504964969
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 615

Book Description
Over twenty-one faithful evangelical Bible teachers have joined together in this work to both honor the legacy of Dr. Mal Couch as well as to promote a solid, sacred, and safe theological manual for the body of Christ. Colleagues and friends of Dr. Couch, such as Dr. Wayne House, Dr. Norman Geisler, Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Dr. Timothy Demy, and more, along with many of Mals students and disciples, set forth in this work a biblical and practical theology. The first half of the book covers all twelve of the major biblical doctrines of Christianity. The last half covers some of the hottest theological topics and practical issues that present-day believers ought to be aware of in order to properly defend the faith. In chapter 25 you will meet many of the disciples in Christ that Mal taught over the years as they express their gratitude for this godly giant of the faith. So if you are curious about what a holistic evangelical faith looks like, and even curious as to how dispensationalism fits within orthodox evangelicalism, this book will provide for you a solid resource for many years to come.

Behold a White Horse

Behold a White Horse PDF Author: Cisco Wheeler
Publisher: Xulon Press
ISBN: 1607913550
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 446

Book Description
"My people are destroyed for lack of Knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). This book is not meant for those who refuse to step out of their box, but instead cling onto their blinders, believing that the world is exactly as they have always been taught it is. Rather, it is specially written for those who discern that things are not exactly as they seem, and are dedicated to the pursuit of truth and knowledge. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places"(Ephesians 6:12). "Behold a White Horse" is a roller coaster ride engaged in a myriad of related topics. The reader will be taken all the way back to ancient Babylon - the foundation of all secret societies, and continue on through Egypt and Rome. Other topics covered are ceremonial magick, kundalini power and evil spirits, the Talmud, Kabbalah, the apostasy of the Christian church today, alchemy, Papal Rome and the Catholic church, false prophets of the world, televangelists - wolves in sheep's clothing, & pagans in the pulpit." " Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen" (Romans 1:25) "This work is spiritually based, using many scriptures. It is the prayer of the author that through careful reading of these pages, the reader can connect the dots into a whole new level of discernment to help guard against demon traps and the many devices of Satan. Knowledge is power and the truth really does set you free."

Satan's Strategy to Curse Christ's Congregation

Satan's Strategy to Curse Christ's Congregation PDF Author: Andy Woods
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1452073848
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Dr. Sherlin has worked diligently to show the importance of elder rule. What he has done is restore us to sound principles that come straight from the Bible. His book is a must for every assembly that wants to remain strong rather than go the way of the culture. I cannot recommend his book enough. Dr. Mal Couch In this work, the author sets out the biblical case for congregations being ruled by a plurality of Godly men, known as elders. This work is meticulously footnoted and documented making it an invaluable resource for the layman and scholar alike. Dr. Andy Woods Keith writes in a manner that is precise and with a fluidity of understanding of current day church leadership. The tone of his writing is shared in love and there are no judgmental undertones that permeate his thoughts. I would wholly recommend this reading to all who profess Christ as their Lord. Pamela Rogers Dr. Keith has presented a solid case for authoritative leadership in the church. His book is a call for us to return to biblical leadership and be presbyters instead of politicians. Dr. C.V. Varnado Do you believe that your local assembly is full of conflict, confusion, and/or compromise? Are you familiar with the strategy of Satan and his methods to undermine the grace, love, and truth of Christ's body? This work makes a clear and convincing case that many problems in congregations occur because the body has adopted a flawed foundation of church government and doctrine that is more political than biblical. How much or to what degree has Satan made inroads into your spiritual family and leadership body? Read and judge for yourself and if necessary seek to apply the prescribed remedy to the problem.

Historical Dictionary of the Baptists

Historical Dictionary of the Baptists PDF Author: William H. Brackney
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810862824
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 713

Book Description
With 110 million members worldwide, Baptists are surpassed only by Roman Catholic and Orthodox groups as the largest segment of Christians. The term 'Baptist' has its origins with the Anabaptists, the denomination historically linked to the English Separatist movement of the 16th century. Although Baptist churches are located throughout the world, the largest group of Baptists lives in the Southern United States, and the Baptist faith has historically exerted a powerful influence in that region of the country. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Baptists expands upon the first edition with an updated chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions. This volume commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Baptist movement in 1609.
