Book Description
Interleaving colour and black-and-white photographs, Simmons has produced an unparalleled study into the way in which Lucas's life informs and shapes her art. Each chapter focuses on a separate work in a sequence of close-up black-and-white shots in dramatic chiaroscuro, interspersed with images from Mexican streets, bars and houses. The images explore the different figures - huddling or sprawling, with breast-like appendages and bulbous limbs - with an almost pornographic intensity, scrutinising their surface textures and their variously firm and flaccid structures. The book features a series of conversations with Lucas's various friends - interwoven to create a revealing and intimate dialogue with the artist about the making of the series. The tone and typography of the words shifts, taking us from poetic musings to explanations of the works and their titles.

Book Description
After 2005, Before 2012 is a major new survey of the work of British sculptor Sarah Lucas (born 1962), from 2005--when her last catalogue raisonn was published--to 2011, in which year she received major solo exhibitions at Two Rooms, Auckland, New Zealand, and Kunsthalle Krems, Austria. The book traces the development of several important bodies of work, from the Penetralia sequence begun in 2008, a series of plaster and fiberglass sculptures of totemic pink phalluses, to the recent series of NUDS sculptures, which consist of nylon tights stuffed with fluff and fashioned into ambiguous biomorphic forms, redolent of Louise Bourgeois. Both series extend Lucas' sculptural exploration of crude genital representations. The book includes a series of interviews between Lucas and artists, curators, writers and friends such as Angus Fairhurst and Angus Cook.

Expressive Interiors

Expressive Interiors PDF Author: Sandra Lucas
Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0847867730
Category : House & Home
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
From the Third Coast comes this inspirational interiors book by award-winning interior designers Sandra Lucas and Sarah Eilers, who show us how to design inviting homes with a classical backbone that are stylish and versatile for today's living. Native Houstonians Lucas and Eilers's aesthetic marries the entrepreneurial, can-do spirit of the West with Southern grace. The distinctive influences of their hometown--from the architecture of John Staub to the textures and color palettes of the surrounding Texas ranches and expansive landscapes to the impact of futuristic NASA--infuse their design choices. Whether traditional, contemporary, or transitional in style, the rooms they create are timeless. The duo's seasoned insight into the principles and elements of interior design forms the book's heart. Touching on such topics as scale and proportion, color and light, and pattern and texture, they explore their pragmatic, imaginative approach to creating expressive living spaces in a diverse range of projects from coast to coast. They then tour us through several homes, including a comfortable family ski compound in Utah with repurposed rough-hewn wooden beams and custom forged-steel fireplace surrounds; a Houston shotgun home rich with patina; and a charming Gulf Coast beach house. For those passionate about interiors, this wealth of design fundamentals is inspirational.

Noah Davis

Noah Davis PDF Author: Noah Davis
Publisher: David Zwirner Books
ISBN: 1644230372
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
Providing a crucial record of the painter Noah Davis’s extraordinary oeuvre, this monograph tells the story of a brilliant artist and cultural force through the eyes of his friends and collaborators. Despite his exceedingly premature death at the age of 32, Davis’s paintings have deeply influenced the rise of figurative and representational painting in the twenty-first century. Davis’s emotionally charged work places him firmly in the canon of great American painting. Stirring, elusive, and attuned to the history of painting, his compositions infuse scenes from everyday life with a magical realist atmosphere and contain traces of his abiding interest in artists such as Marlene Dumas, Kerry James Marshall, Fairfield Porter, and Luc Tuymans. This catalogue is born of the unique relationship between Davis and Helen Molesworth, whom Davis entrusted to be the curator of his work. It is published on the occasion of the 2020 exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, which travels to The Underground Museum in Los Angeles, a space that Davis founded with his wife, artist Karon Davis. In her introduction, catalogue essay, and interviews with important figures in Davis’s life, Molesworth shows how the artist’s generosity and sense of responsibility galvanized a uniquely supportive artistic community, culture, and vision. Together with color illustrations and archival photographs, the book features heartfelt testimonials that unfold in the intimate yet expansive spirit of studio visits with people close to him.
