Book Description
At the dawn of civilization, the innocent AIYANA awaits the return of the Akrotirian prince, SAMA. Three years previous she was néos, the chief's daughter who amused the prince; now, in the first flower of womanhood, her romantic longing is brightened by anticipation of the festival, the prince, the mystery.Sama, "Samalon", son of Apollon, son of Atalon for whom Atlantis is named. Seven hundred years after the volcano that destroyed the kingdom of Atalon (Atlantis) the island was refounded by Theras, son of Austesion, descendent of the hero Cadmus; it is from Theras that the island receives its name, Thera. Our story occurs before the age of heroes during the age of demigods, Apollon being the human manifestation of the divine Apollo. Archeological evidence suggests trade between the Doric-Ionian cultures (the Seafarers, as named by the Egyptians) of the Aegean Sea and the Americas; D.N.A. gives evidence that several American Indian societies have a Mediterranean ancestry. It is likely that the towns of Akrotiri and Knossos share a common culture. The jealous eruption of Kaptara scatters the Atlantians and civilizes the Western world. Our

Book Description
Sama Alshaibi: Sand Rushes In , the first book by this rising artist, presents work from Silsila , a video and photographic installation that premiered at the 2013 Venice Biennale, as well as other series. Alshaibis lyrical multimedia work explores the landscape of conflict: the ongo - ing competition for land, resources, and power in the Middle East, and the internal battle for control between fear and fearlessness. Additional material, selected from the artists series Negatives Capable Hands, Collapse, and Thowra, is presented in the context of Silsila , meaning chain or link in Arabic. The artist uses the desert, borders, and the body as over - arching symbols of the geopolitical and environmental issues and histories, linking the Arab- speaking world. Alshaibi operates between the United States, western Asia, and North Africa. Much of her work is inspired by and shot onsite in distinct natural landscapes, from the Western Sahara of North Africa to the eastern Arabian Desert on the edges of Iraqhighlighting the jarring contrast between desert and fertile oasis. Alshaibi is often a protagonist in the work, taking on the guise of distinct yet interrelated characters. Edited by Isabella Ellaheh Hughes, a writer and curator based in Abu Dhabi and Honolulu, this book includes an interview between Hughes and Alshaibi, a foreword by Salwa Mikdadi, and an essay by Alfredo Cramerotti.

Ethnography in Unstable Places

Ethnography in Unstable Places PDF Author: Carol J. Greenhouse
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822383489
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 447

Book Description
Ethnography in Unstable Places is a collection of ethnographic accounts of everyday situations in places undergoing dramatic political transformation. Offering vivid case studies that range from the Middle East and Africa to Europe, Russia, and Southeast Asia, the contributing anthropologists narrate particular circumstances of social and political transformation—in contexts of colonialism, war and its aftermath, social movements, and post–Cold War climates—from the standpoints of ordinary people caught up in and having to cope with the collapse or reconfiguration of the states in which they live. Using grounded ethnographic detail to explore the challenges to the anthropological imagination that are posed by modern uncertainties, the contributors confront the ambiguities and paradoxes that exist across the spectrum of human cultures and geographies. The collection is framed by introductory and concluding chapters that highlight different dimensions of the book’s interrelated themes—agency and ethnographic reflexivity, identity and ethics, and the inseparability of political economy and interpretivism. Ethnography in Unstable Places will interest students and specialists in social anthropology, sociology, political science, international relations, and cultural studies. Contributors. Eve Darian-Smith, Howard J. De Nike, Elizabeth Faier, James M. Freeman, Robert T. Gordon, Carol J. Greenhouse, Nguyen Dinh Huu, Carroll McC. Lewin, Elizabeth Mertz, Philip C. Parnell, Nancy Ries, Judy Rosenthal, Kay B. Warren, Stacia E. Zabusky
