Ambrose

Ambrose PDF Author: John Moorhead
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317891015
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
An account, and assessment, of the career of St Ambrose (339-397), from 374 bishop of Milan and one of the four Doctors of the Christian Church (with Sts. Jerome, Augustine and Gregory the Great). A key figure in the transition of the later Roman Empire into its medieval successor, Western Christendom, Ambrose was deeply involved in the political, social and religious issues of his day: struggles between church and state (especially with Emperor Theodosius), the fight against heresy, but he also had a deep influence on Church thought such as the role and status of women. John Moorhead considers all these dimensions in a book that will be of compelling interest to historians of the Church and the late classical world and classical studies.

The Sources of Beneventan Chant

The Sources of Beneventan Chant PDF Author: Thomas Forrest Kelly
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000948536
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
The area whose capital was the southern Lombard city of Benevento developed a culture identified with the characteristic form of writing known as the Beneventan script, which was used throughout the area and was brought to perfection at the abbey of Montecassino in the late eleventh century. This repertory, along with other now-vanished or suppressed local varieties of music, give a far richer picture of the variety of musical practice in early medieval Europe than was formerly available. Thomas Forrest Kelly has identified and collected the surviving sources of an important repertory of early medieval music; this is the so-called Beneventan Chant, used in southern Italy in the early middle ages, before the adoption there of the now-universal music known as Gregorian chant. Because it was deliberately suppressed in the course of the eleventh century, this music survives mostly in fragments and palimpsests, and the fascinating process of restoring the repertory piece by piece is told in the studies in this book. A companion volume to this collection also by Professor Kelly details the practice of Medieval music.

Western Plainchant

Western Plainchant PDF Author: David Hiley
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198165729
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 764

Book Description
Plainchant is the oldest substantial body of music that has been preserved in any shape or form. It was first written down in Western Europe in the eighth to ninth centuries. Many thousands of chants have been sung at different times or places in a multitude of forms and styles, responding to the differing needs of the church through the ages. This book provides a clear and concise introduction, designed both for those to whom the subject is new and those who require a reference work for advanced study. It begins with an explanation of the liturgies that plainchant was designed to serve. It describes all the chief genres of chant, different types of liturgical book, and plainchant notations. After an exposition of early medieval theoretical writing on plainchant, Hiley provides a historical survey that traces the constantly changing nature of the repertory. He also discusses important musicians and centers of composition. Copiously illustrated with over 200 musical examples, this book highlights the diversity of practice and richness of the chant repertory in the Middle Ages. It will be an indispensable introduction and reference source on this important music for many years to come.

Prologus

Prologus PDF Author: Saint Ivo (Bishop of Chartres)
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 9783825873868
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
The Prologue to Bishop Ivo of Chartres' Decretum and Panormia has long been recognized as a seminal text in medieval canon law. It can be fairly called the first extended treatment of ecclesiastical jurisprudence. In its attention to categories of law and context, it also demonstrates the nascent scholastic method. This treatise on the tension between rigor and mercy in judgment - and how they could be reconciled through dispensation - spoke not only to legal and theological concerns of the early twelfth century but also to enduring questions about the nature and limits of ecclesiastical law. This book offers the first critical edition of the text based not only on extensive examination of the manuscripts but also the sources Ivo used in its composition. This enables a detailed examination of the text, which, from start to finish, reveals Ivo's conviction that love, caritas, was the essence of canon law.

The Carolingian Sacramentaries of Saint-Amand

The Carolingian Sacramentaries of Saint-Amand PDF Author: Arthur Westwell
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 1501517562
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 514

Book Description
The series of beautiful sacramentaries made at Saint-Amand in the later ninth century offer us unique insight into an early medieval scriptorium at work. These manuscripts contain principally the prayer texts for the celebration of the Mass, a ceremony which stood at the centre of monastic life in this period. They display how this largely neglected genre discloses creativity and initiative on the part of the monks of Saint-Amand, who re-organised and re-composed this especially versatile literature. They made their books uniquely comprehensive and full of insight into how the mass liturgy was re-made at a critical period in its development. This innovative study makes these sources accessible for the first time. In-depth study of script, decoration, and content enables a new appreciation of the context in which the deluxe Saint-Amand manuscripts were produced. It foregrounds ecclesiastical patronage, the political and intellectual dynamics at the waning of Carolingian power, and the intensive collaboration of scribes, artists, and liturgical composers, as well as the unique ways liturgical manuscripts can inform our understanding of medieval life and thought.
