The Little Way of Ruthie Leming

The Little Way of Ruthie Leming PDF Author: Rod Dreher
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
ISBN: 1455521906
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 219

Book Description
The Little Way of Ruthie Leming follows Rod Dreher, a Philadelphia journalist, back to his hometown of St. Francisville, Louisiana (pop. 1,700) in the wake of his younger sister Ruthie's death. When she was diagnosed at age 40 with a virulent form of cancer in 2010, Dreher was moved by the way the community he had left behind rallied around his dying sister, a schoolteacher. He was also struck by the grace and courage with which his sister dealt with the disease that eventually took her life. In Louisiana for Ruthie's funeral in the fall of 2011, Dreher began to wonder whether the ordinary life Ruthie led in their country town was in fact a path of hidden grandeur, even spiritual greatness, concealed within the modest life of a mother and teacher. In order to explore this revelation, Dreher and his wife decided to leave Philadelphia, move home to help with family responsibilities and have their three children grow up amidst the rituals that had defined his family for five generations-Mardi Gras, L.S.U. football games, and deer hunting. As David Brooks poignantly described Dreher's journey homeward in a recent New York Times column, Dreher and his wife Julie "decided to accept the limitations of small-town life in exchange for the privilege of being part of a community."

Book Description
This inspiring Christian novel begins when four very different women meet in a coffee shop while they’re waiting for a Minnesota Coach to take them to their various destinations. They are not able to depart because a bad snowstorm makes the coach pull over. One of the women is Ruthie, a Christian mentor and the oldest of the four. In her early seventies, she is a cheerful and caring person who offers the other women shelter at her cottage. While there, Issy, the youngest of the characters at eighteen, has an emotional breakdown. Issy has low self-esteem and harbors shame and guilt, but this unexpected meeting brings her resolution. It also affects the other two women, Conchetta, a society woman in her fifties, and forty-year-old Jamaica, who wants to be a singer. When Issy breaks down, it results in the other women also sharing their hidden feelings. Although the four come from different backgrounds and seem to have little in common, after hearing Ruthie share her story and testimony of how the Lord helped her through a tremendous trial, they are all so inspired that they come together to know the Lord.

Possessed Voices

Possessed Voices PDF Author: Ruthie Abeliovich
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438474458
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
Finalist for the 2020 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award in the category of Jews and the Arts: Music, Performance, and Visual presented by the Association for Jewish Studies Possessed Voices tells the intriguing story of a largely unknown collection of audio recordings, which preserve performances of modernist interwar Hebrew plays. Ruthie Abeliovich focuses on four recordings: a 1931 recording of The Eternal Jew (1919/1923), a 1965 recording of The Dybbuk (1922), a 1961 radio play of The Golem (1925), and a 1952 radio play of Yaakov and Rachel (1928). Abeliovich traces the spoken language of modernist Hebrew theater as grounded in multiple modalities of expressive practices, including spoken Hebrew, Jewish liturgical sensibilities supplemented by Yiddish intonation and other vernacular accents, and in relation to prevalent theatrical forms. The book shows how these recorded performances provided Jewish immigrants from Europe with a venue for lamenting the decline of their home communities and for connecting their memories to the present. Analyzing sonic material against the backdrop of its artistic, cultural, and ideological contexts, Abeliovich develops a critical framework for the study of sound as a discipline in its own right in theater scholarship.
