Book Description
Rowlandson's Oxford is a book by A. Hamilton Gibbs. Gibbs was an English American novelist, here exploring the history and traditions of the Oxford University in England. Excerpt: "It is, therefore, with great diffidence that I have attempted to resuscitate the life and moods of Oxford of the eighteenth century. Barely two years have elapsed since the days when I looked out from my windows into the quad of my college. All the work and play, the alarums and excursions which go to form the life of the average Undergraduate have not yet had time to fade into dim, half forgotten memories. Alma Mater still grasps me in her warm hand. So vivid indeed are all the impressions which I received from the friendly gargoyles and the peace-touched lawns, the beautiful colleges with their silent cloisters, the full-blooded twenty-firsters and bump-suppers, and the thousand and one everyday happenings, that I might be merely awaiting the passing of vacation to go up once more."

Book Description
Excerpt from Some Impressions of Oxford DO you remember, dear companion of past days so long passed already, do you remember our walks through the arden of the Luxemburg ten years ago is-iappy time when, under the pretence of prepar ing for our examinations we talked of literature, amongst the marble statues in which lives again the remembrance of princesses long since gone! The statues themselves were very ordinary pieces of sculpture, but the names of the queens inscribed on the pedestals made us dream -vaguely. There floated before us on the afternoon air of the spring-time and autumn, the hope of a life so noble and so pure. Our great joy then was to dis cuss art, our worst grief the thought of the uncertainty of the truths of meta physics and religion. Oxford and Oxford Life (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. Wells

Book Description
Excerpt from Oxford and Oxford Life It is now more than two years since I agreed with Messrs Methnen & Co. to re-edit "Oxford, its Life and Schools," which was edited by Mr Stedman in 1887. But the important and widely-supported movement for a radical change in the degree system of Oxford, which was set on foot by the President of Corpus, seemed at one time likely to be successful: it was useless to think of publishing anything on Oxford while this uncertainty as to future changes prevailed, and hence the delay in the appearance of the book. I have spoken of it as a new edition of an old work; it would be more true to call it a new book. Chapters II., III., V., VII., and IX. are entirely new, while chapters IV., VI., and VIII. have been most carefully revised, and considerable additions have been made to them. Unfortunatly my friend, Mr Henson, was too busy to spare any time to complete chapter I., and left it entirely in my hands. I have therefore republished it as before (with the correction of two or three obvious misprints), adding, however, some pages to it (pp. 25 to 30) dealing with the history of the present century. Book Description
Excerpt from Oxford Most of these chapters have been filled by a brief search into my recollections of Oxford. They aim, therefore, at recording my own impressions as faithfully as the resultant stir of fancy would allow. But I am also deeply and Obviously indebted to several books, and in particular to the histories of Oxford by Parker, Maxwell Lyte, and Boase; to Mr. F. E. Robinson's series Of College Histories to Reminiscenees of Oxford and its companion volumes from the Clarendon Press and, above all the rest, to Anthony 51 Wood, and to the Rev. Andrew Clark's perfect editions of that writer's se and Times, and Of John Aubrey's Brief Lives. The Editors of le Daily Clzrom'ele, le Illustrated London News, and Crampton's Magazine have kindly given me permission to reprint a few pages from my contributions thereto. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Oxford Even as it is, I have been unavoidably compelled to save space by omitting much that I had written and practically all my refer ences and acknowledgments. Yet, where one has gathered so much honey from other men's flowers not to acknowledge the debt in detail appears discourteous and ungrateful; and not to give chapter and verse jars also upon the historical conscience. I can only say that, very gratefully, J'az' prir 772072 bien oz} je l'ai trozwe', whether in the forty odd volumes of the Oxford His torical Society, the twenty volumes of the College Histories, the accurate and erudite monographs of Dr Rashdall (mediaeval Universities and Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte (history of the University of Oxford to the year or innumerable other works. Where so much has been so well done by others in the way of dealing with periods and sections of my whole subject, my chief business has been to read, mark, digest, and then to arrange my story. But to do that thoroughly has been no light task. Whether it be well done or ill-done, the story now told has the great merit of providing an occasion, excuse was never needed.
