"A Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) is an area of wireless technologies that are attracting a great deal of interest. There are still several areas of VANETS, such as medium access control, security and routing protocols, that lack large amounts of research. There is also a lack of freely available simulators that can quickly and accurately simulate VANETs. One of the two main goals of this thesis was to develop a freely available VANET simulator and to evaluate popular mobile ad-hoc network routing protocols in several VANET scenarios. The VANET simulator consisted of a network simulator, a traffic (mobility simulator) and used a client-server application to keep the two simulators in sync. The VANET simulator also models buildings in order to create a more realistic wireless network environment. The second main goal of this thesis was to provide an evaluation of the routing protocols that are commonly used in mobile ad-hoc networks, which will apply to VANETs. Ad-Hoc Distance Vector routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO) were initially simulated in a city, country, and highway environment in order to provide an overall evaluation."--Abstract.

In the literature, there are several routing protocols for VANETs which are more or less reliable to reach safety requirements. In this book, we start by describing all VANET basic concepts such as VANET definition, VANET versus Mobile ad-Hoc Network (MANET), architectures, routing definition and steps, Quality of Service (QoS) for VANET Routing, Metrics of evaluation, Experimentation, and simulation of VANETs, mobility patterns of VANET etc. Moreover, different routing protocols for routing in VANETs will be described. We propose two main categories to be presented: classical routing and bio-inspired routing. Concerning classical VANET, main principles and all phases will be overviewed, as well as, their two sub-categories which are topological and geographical protocols. After that, we propose a new category called bio-inspired routing which is inspired by natural phenomenon such as Ant colony, Bee life, Genetic operators etc. We present also, some referential protocols as example of each category. [ANGLÈS] VANETs (Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks) are an emerging new technology which integrates the capabilities of new generation wireless networks to vehicles. It includes a variety of applications such as co-operative traffic monitoring, control of traffic flows, blind crossing, prevention of collisions, nearby information services and real-time detour routes computation. Another important application for VANETs is providing Internet connectivity to vehicular nodes while on the move, so that passengers can download music, send emails, book a restaurant or play games. Because of the high nodes mobility and unreliable channel conditions, VANETs have unique characteristics which pose many challenging research issues. This work is mainly focused on a key networking problem: routing protocol for VANETs. The main requirement of routing protocols is to achieve minimal communication time with minimum consumption of network resources. Many routing protocols have been developed for MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc Networks), such as AODV (Ad-hoc On demand Distance Vector) and DSR (Dynamic Source Routing). However, VANETs differ from MANETs by their highly dynamic topology. A number of studies have been done to simulate and compare the performance of those routing protocols in various traffic conditions in VANETs. Simulation results showed that MANET routing protocols suffer from poor performances because of the characteristics of fast vehicle's movement, dynamic information exchange and relative high speed of mobile nodes. This text aims to continue the work of Roger Calzada in his final degree thesis. In that thesis, AODV was the routing protocol used during the simulation process to evaluate its performance over VANETs. The conclusion of the thesis was that AODV is not the best routing protocol to handle high mobility of nodes and short duration of routes. He proposed as future work the evaluation of existing routing protocol which considers car position, trajectories or speeds gathered via GPS (Global Positioning System) that could lead to better results. To consider the vehicle network, people can intuitively think to use the geographical position information to decide the route. Most position based routing algorithms base forwarding decision on location information. GSR (Geographical Source Routing) is a promising routing technique for VANETs and recently several routing protocols have been proposed based on it. For example, GPSR (Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing) is one of the best known position-based protocols in literature. Basically, our project is divided in two parts: first, we make a state of the art related to the VANETs in order to find the most appropriate and recommended mobility generator and network simulator reported in literature. We also include at the end of this part the description of GPSR routing protocol. Second, from the research done in the previous part, we use VanetMobiSim as a mobility generator due to its variety models that could be tested; and NS2 as a network simulator for being one of the most used by many authors and also due to its compatibility with VanetMobiSim. Using these tools, VanetMobiSim and NS2, we carry out a performance evaluation of two routing protocols (AODV and GPSR) over VANETs. We give different values to parameters such as the number of nodes, speed, transmission range and different propagation models. Finally, we analyze and discuss the benefits of GPSR compared to AODV in vehicular scenarios.

In this thesis, the performance analysis of proactive and reactive routing protocols in both urban and highway scenarios is presented. The simulations performed for this analysis are of two types; bi-directionally coupled simulations and offline simulations. In both types, urban and highway scenarios are simulated. In bi-directionally coupled simulations, network and traffic simulators are integrated at runtime to exchange different commands. This thesis is the first research effort that integrates both network and traffic simulators at runtime. This integration helps in modeling emergency scenarios on roads like accidents, etc. In offline simulations, real world maps are used to model urban and highway topologies.

With the rapid growth in wireless mobile communication technology, Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) has emerged as a promising method to effectively solve transportation-related issues. So far, most of researches on VANETs have been conducted with simulations as the real-world experiment is expensive. A core problem affecting the fidelity of simulation is the mobility model employed. In this thesis, a sophisticated traffic simulator capable of generating realistic vehicle traces is introduced. Combined with network simulator NS-2, we used this tool to evaluate the general performance of several routing protocols and studied the impact of intersections on simulation results. We show that static nodes near the intersection tend to become more active in packet delivery with higher transferred throughput.
