Essays on Swedish Cultural Life During the Late Eighteenth Century

Essays on Swedish Cultural Life During the Late Eighteenth Century PDF Author: Alan Mauritz Swanson
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1036411052
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
When dusting out corners, we often find things once thought useful, but perhaps not useful enough to keep on display or ready to hand. If we dust in a time and place distant from that in which they were once used, we may be surprised by their vitality, which may also lead us to ask why we swept them into that corner in the first place. The articles in this book look at old letters, a popular song, a hit comedy, an overlooked opera, three Swedish composers of the period, and illustrations in a popular book. They are intended to surprise us with the residual vitality of what one can find in those dusty corners. The choice of one place and time to sweep within this book is purely practical and not exclusive; there remain many other dusty corners to be swept.

Organization and Financing of Public Health Services in Europe

Organization and Financing of Public Health Services in Europe PDF Author: Centers of Disease Control
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9289051701
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
What are public health services? Countries across Europe understand what they are or what they should include differently. This study describes the experiences of nine countries detailing the ways they have opted to organize and finance public health services and train and employ their public health workforce. It covers England France Germany Italy the Netherlands Slovenia Sweden Poland and the Republic of Moldova and aims to give insights into current practice that will support decision-makers in their efforts to strengthen public health capacities and services. Each country chapter captures the historical background of public health services and the context in which they operate; sets out the main organizational structures; assesses the sources of public health financing and how it is allocated; explains the training and employment of the public health workforce; and analyses existing frameworks for quality and performance assessment. The study reveals a wide range of experience and variation across Europe and clearly illustrates two fundamentally different approaches to public health services: integration with curative health services (as in Slovenia or Sweden) or organization and provision through a separate parallel structure (Republic of Moldova). The case studies explore the context that explain this divergence and its implications. This study is the result of close collaboration between the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and the WHO Regional Office for Europe Division of Health Systems and Public Health. It accompanies two other Observatory publications Organization and financing of public health services in Europe and The role of public health organizations in addressing public health problems in Europe: the case of obesity alcohol and antimicrobial resistance (both forthcoming).

Culture and Customs of Sweden

Culture and Customs of Sweden PDF Author: Byron J. Nordstrom
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313343721
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
This work is an in-depth look at many aspects of contemporary Swedish customs and culture that ties today's nation to an understanding of its history. Culture and Customs of Sweden is an ideal introduction to this fascinating nation. The book opens with a broad overview of the country and then examines specific themes such as religion, marriage, family, gender issues, education, holidays, popular customs, sports and leisure, media, literature, performing arts, art, and architecture. Throughout, the author seeks to strike a balance between the history of these many aspects of contemporary Sweden and what is happening there today—at a time when Sweden is undergoing many profound changes. For example, the chapter on literature looks at both the development of Swedish literature since the Middle Ages and at current interests, themes, and writers. Each of the themes covered is central to introducing both Sweden's past and its present, facilitating the kind of understanding that is so important in this ever-shrinking world.

Cultural History of Early Modern European Streets

Cultural History of Early Modern European Streets PDF Author: Riitta Laitinen
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047425987
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
In urban life, streets are elemental, but urban history seldom places them centre stage. It tends to view them as mere backdrops for events or social relations, or to study them as material constructions, the fruit of urban planning, but largely vacant of inhabitants. Examining people and streets in tandem, the contributors to this volume strive towards more integrated urban history. They discuss the social and political processes of early modern street life, and the discursive play in which streets figured. Six chapters, based in Sweden-Finland, England, Portugal, Italy, and Transylvania, discuss the subtle interplay of the material and immaterial, public and private, planned order and versatility, spontaneous invention, control and resistance – all matters central to how streets worked. Contributors are Emese Bálint, Maria Helena Barreiros, Elizabeth S. Cohen, Thomas V. Cohen, Alexander Cowan, Anu Korhonen, Riitta Laitinen, and Dag Lindström.

Transnational Feminism in Nineteenth-Century Swedish Literature and Periodical Culture

Transnational Feminism in Nineteenth-Century Swedish Literature and Periodical Culture PDF Author: Eloïse Forestier
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004707018
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865) reached out to the world beyond her native Sweden. Her promotion of women’s emancipation was celebrated and pursued by Sophie Adlersparre (1823–1895), Rosalie Olivecrona (1823–1898), and Alma Åkermark (1853–1933). From dreams to projects involving collaboration with Britain, France, and Germany, in translation, literature, and periodical editing, this book unearths exciting transnational connections that contributed to the awakening of the Nordic feminist movement. Shedding light on the circulation of liberal ideas, Marxist theory, and the Nordic debate, the three chapters of the book focus on cultural variation, constructive conflicts, mutual (mis)understandings, and class issues.
