Book Description
Prepared by Technical Council on Life-Cycle Performance, Safety, Reliability, and Risk of Structural Systems of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil EngineersRisk-Based Structural Evaluation Methods: Best Practices and Development of Standards provides a comprehensive summary of the findings from a survey of attitudes of researchers, structural engineers, and government agencies to risk-informed structural engineering practices and a follow-up workshop. Risk analysis principles are well established from a theoretical point of view; however, a number of barriers have hampered a wide-scale implementation of risk-based methods in decision-making processes. This book examines the progress made on the application of risk-based structural evaluation methods (RBsEM) and provides recommendations to help enhance their implementation in engineering practice. The issues addressed includeRisk evaluation for new and existing structural systems, Hazard assessment and statistical projection of expected extreme natural and human-made events, Probabilistic analysis of structural systems, Assessment of physical damage to structures and infrastructure systems and evaluation of consequences, Estimation of associated direct and indirect losses and risk quantification, Risk communication to different stakeholders including the general public, Establishment of optimum risk acceptance criteria that take into consideration public attitudes toward risk, andPrioritization of risk mitigation strategies. This report will be a valuable resource for engineers, owners, regulators, and policy makers working toward implementation of RBsEM as the basis for managing our structure and infrastructure systems

New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports
Author: Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309588782
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 99
Book Description
The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Risk-Based Bridge Engineering
Author: Khaled Mahmoud
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000727238
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
Risk-based engineering is essential for the efficient asset management and safe operation of bridges. A risk-based asset management strategy couples risk management, standard work, reliability-based inspection and structural analysis, and condition-based maintenance to properly apply resources based on process criticality. This ensures that proper controls are put in place and reliability analysis is used to ensure continuous improvement. An effective risk-based management system includes an enterprise asset management or resource solution that properly catalogues asset attribute data, a functional hierarchy, criticality analysis, risk and failure analysis, control plans, reliability analysis and continuous improvement. Such efforts include periodic inspections, condition evaluations and prioritizing repairs accordingly. This book contains select papers that were presented at the 10th New York City Bridge Conference, held on August 26-27, 2019. The volume is a valuable contribution to the state-of-the-art in bridge engineering.

Reliability-Based Analysis and Design of Structures and Infrastructure
Author: Ehsan Noroozinejad Farsangi
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000418065
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 522
Book Description
Increasing demand on improving the resiliency of modern structures and infrastructure requires ever more critical and complex designs. Therefore, the need for accurate and efficient approaches to assess uncertainties in loads, geometry, material properties, manufacturing processes, and operational environments has increased significantly. Reliability-based techniques help develop more accurate initial guidance for robust design and help to identify the sources of significant uncertainty in structural systems. Reliability-Based Analysis and Design of Structures and Infrastructure presents an overview of the methods of classical reliability analysis and design most associated with structural reliability. It also introduces more modern methods and advancements, and emphasizes the most useful methods and techniques used in reliability and risk studies, while elaborating their practical applications and limitations rather than detailed derivations. Features: Provides a practical and comprehensive overview of reliability and risk analysis and design techniques. Introduces resilient and smart structures/infrastructure that will lead to more reliable and sustainable societies. Considers loss elimination, risk management and life-cycle asset management as related to infrastructure projects. Introduces probability theory, statistical methods, and reliability analysis methods. Reliability-Based Analysis and Design of Structures and Infrastructure is suitable for researchers and practicing engineers, as well as upper-level students taking related courses in structural reliability analysis and design.

Probabilistic Methods for Structural Design
Author: Carlos Guedes Soares
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940115614X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 411
Book Description
This book contains contributions from various authors on different important topics related with probabilistic methods used for the design of structures. Initially several of the papers were prepared for advanced courses on structural reliability or on probabilistic methods for structural design. These courses have been held in different countries and have been given by different groups of lecturers. They were aimed at engineers and researchers who already had some exposure to structural reliability methods and thus they presented overviews of the work in the various topics. The book includes a selection of those contributions, which can be of support for future courses or for engineers and researchers that want to have an update on specific topics. It is considered a complement to the existing textbooks on structural reliability, which normally ensure the coverage of the basic topics but then are not extensive enough to cover some more specialised aspects. In addition to the contributions drawn from those lectures there are several papers that have been prepared specifically for this book, aiming at complementing the others in providing an overall account of the recent advances in the field. It is with sadness that in the meanwhile we have seen the disappearance of two of the contributors to the book and, in fact two of the early contributors to this field.

Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance
Author: Khaled M Mahmoud
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 100382899X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
Effective maintenance of bridge structures comprises a broad spectrum of plans for repairs and services implemented to enable bridges to perform their intended function. These include in-depth inspection, fatigue analysis, design of mitigation measures and construction to avert component deterioration. Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. The book is aimed at bridge engineers.
