Joseph Richards (1762-1840), direct descen- dant in the seventh generation, was born in Southborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts and served in the Revolutionary War. In 1781 he married Rhode Howe, and moved to settle in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. All but two of their surviving children became Mormon converts, and eventually moved to Utah and elsewhere. Ancestors lived in New England and in England.

He fathered 11 children with his slaves; educated, and provided for them all. Raising 15 children on his plantation during the "Seminole Wars," brother John Charles became the progenitor of a long line Florida Richards. While most members of the "Richard Clan" were prominent citizens, quite a few were of dubious character, and met violent deaths.
