Vanishing Cultures of South Africa

Vanishing Cultures of South Africa PDF Author: Peter Magubane
Publisher: Rizzoli International Publications
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
Ten major ethnic groups are featured - including the San, Zulu, Ndebele, Basotho, and Venda - as well as several smaller sub-groups. This book describes the individual personality and history of each, their education, laws, languages, medicine and magic, and their religion. Over 200 photographs capture the vibrant color of ceremonial and everyday dress and ornamentation, musical instruments, dances and rites of passage, art, homes, and work. The remarkable metal neck rings and the geometrically beaded wire hoops worn by Ndebele and Ntwana women, the sacrificial ceremonies of the Zulu, the long pipes smoked by the Xhosa, and the traditional hunter-gatherer weapons of the San, deep in the Kalahari Desert - the details of today's way of life are recorded here in evocative pictures, while former traditions, now lost, fill the text with the intriguing, vital history of each group.

Pioneers, Settlers, Aliens, Exiles

Pioneers, Settlers, Aliens, Exiles PDF Author: J. L. Fisher
Publisher: ANU E Press
ISBN: 1921666153
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 291

Book Description
What did the future hold for Rhodesia's white population at the end of a bloody armed conflict fought against settler colonialism? Would there be a place for them in newly independent Zimbabwe? PIONEERS, SETTLERS, ALIENS, EXILES sets out the terms offered by Robert Mugabe in 1980 to whites who opted to stay in the country they thought of as their home. The book traces over the next two decades their changing relationshipwith the country when the post-colonial government revised its symbolic and geographical landscape and reworked codes of membership. Particular attention is paid to colonial memories and white interpellation in the official account of the nation's rebirth and indigene discourses, in view of which their attachment to the place shifted and weakened. As the book describes the whites' trajectory from privileged citizens to persons of disputed membership and contested belonging, it provides valuable background information with regard to the land and governance crises that engulfed Zimbabwe at the start of the twenty-first century.

Maronda Mashanu: The History Of A Community

Maronda Mashanu: The History Of A Community PDF Author: Murray Steele
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1326970283
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
The Maronda Mashona (Five Wounds of Christ) community was set up in colonial Zimbabwe just over a century ago by the missionary, poet, redoubtable champion of African rights and fierce critic of imperialist oppression, Rev Arthur Shearly Cripps. This book describes the evolution of the community from its beginnings as a mission sanctuary for black people who had been deprived of their lands or had suffered oppression at the hands of white farmers and officials. Following Cripps's death in 1952, the Maronda Mashona community evolved into a conjunction of small-scale landholders and communal area cultivators, tied together by their common identification with the legacy of Baba Cripps. It is the culmination of the author's long association with the Maronda Mashanu community, going back several decades, and is based on extensive oral and documentary evidence.

Inselbergs

Inselbergs PDF Author: S. Porembski
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642597734
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 543

Book Description
Inselbergs are isolated rock outcrops that stand out abruptly from surrounding plains. Despite the widespread occurrence of granite inselbergs throughout all climatic and vegetational zones, their remarkably rich plant life was largely neglected in the recent literature. This richly and partly in color illustrated volume provides a detailed survey of all major abiotic and biotic features characteristic for inselbergs. The extreme environmental conditions on inselbergs are described in depth as well as specific adaptive traits of rock outcrop plants including their morphological, anatomical and physiological responses. The diversity and structure of inselberg plant communities are examined on a global scale with detailed regional accounts for different tropical and temperate zones.
