In this paper, we summarize the high power testing results of the X-band mixed-mode RF windows at KEK and SLAC for linear colliders. The main feature of these windows is that the combination of modes on the surface of the ceramic significantly decreases the electric and magnetic fields in the junction between the ceramic and the metal. So far two types of high power windows (with the diameter of 53 mm and 64 mm) have been fabricated. A high power model of the smaller type window was fabricated and tested in a resonant ring at KEK. A maximum circulating power of 81 MW with 300 ns duration or 66 MW with 700 ns duration was achieved. Light emission was observed for a power level of over 10 MW. Later, both windows were shipped to SLAC for even higher power testing using combined power from two klystrons. The first window (53 mm diameter) achieved a transmitted power of 80 MW with 1.5 microsec duration at 30 Hz repetition. It was not destroyed during the testing. The testing of the second window was carried out next to the small type and achieved 62 MW with 1.5 microsec duration with 10 Hz repetition. The final results of both windows are presented in this report.

The purpose of the work undertaken by this study program was to pursue theoretical and experimental investigations leading to the development, fabrication and testing of windows with bandwidths up to 25% and capable of transmitting 250 kilowatts cw, X-band power. Considerations of bandwidth and power requirements limited fabrication of test models to windows using single and double discs and self resonant block windows. The program requirements were more than satisfied by the high power testing to 275 kilowatts of a single crystal sapphire disc windown. In all, three different sapphire windows were tested without window failure to powers of 250 kilowatts or more. (Author).

SLAC is committed to developing an X-band source capable of producing 100 Megawatt, 1 microsecond pulses to power the next linear collider. The first experience encountered at SLAC in the X-Band Regime above a few Megawatts was in the relativistic klystron program in cooperation with LLNL and LBL. About 280 MW had been transmitted through a variety of waveguide components but at very short pulse widths ((approximately)40 nanseconds) and very low pulse repetition rates. The likelihood of high peak power rf breakdown in most X-band components and especially rf windows increases as the rf pulse length becomes longer. Testing components at peak power levels above that at which they are expected to reliably perform is essential in a development program.
