Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 316

What role did the agricultural sector play in the economic crash of 1929? Taking evidence from country cases across Europe and the Americas, this edited volume explores short-, medium- and long- term perspectives on the primary sector. The monograph brings together the voices of an international panel of contributors who examine issues such as falling prices, industrial production, unemployment and the stagnation of aggregate demand. Together, they frame the interwar period as a pivotal turning point in the decline of subsistence agriculture and the growth of agricultural subsidies, which remain a key policy tool in many economies today. This illuminating book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in economic history, agricultural history, globalization and economic development.

Production and Consumption in the Low Countries, 13th-16th Centuries
Author: Raymond van Uytven
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040235603
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 362
Book Description
The subject of this volume is the relationship between production and consumption, considered not only as the supply and demand sides of economic life, but within the broader context of the societies of the Low Countries between the 12th and the 16th centuries. Amongst the topics covered are the reality of the so-called 'late medieval depression', comparisons between the great merchant cities of Bruges and Antwerp, and the actual importance of the trade in art and luxury goods. One group of articles then looks in detail at the cloth industry, which remained the mainstay of the region's wealth, and the effects upon it of changes in technology and in fashion, while the volume concludes with two studies specially translated from Dutch, on wine and beer consumption.

The Marriage Exchange
Author: Martha C. Howell
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226355179
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
Medieval Douai was one of the wealthiest cloth towns of Flanders, and it left an enormous archive documenting the personal financial affairs of its citizens—wills, marriage agreements, business contracts, and records of court disputes over property rights of all kinds. Based on extensive research in this archive, this book reveals how these documents were produced in a centuries-long effort to regulate—and ultimately to redefine—property and gender relations. At the center of the transformation was a shift from a marital property regime based on custom to one based on contract. In the former, a widow typically inherited her husband's property; in the latter, she shared it with or simply held it for his family or offspring. Howell asks why the law changed as it did and assesses the law's effects on both social and gender meanings but she insists that the reform did not originate in general dissatisfaction with custom or a desire to disempower widows. Instead, it was born in a complex economic, social and cultural history during which Douaisiens gradually came to think about both property and gender in new ways.
