Book Description
Gastric acid plays a primary role in digestion as well as in the sterilization of food and water. Gastric juice contains the most concentrated physiological acid solution (pH~1) as a result + – of H and Cl ion secretion [hydrochloric acid (HCl) production] by parietal cells in the oxyntic mucosa of the stomach. The combined output of the parietal cells leads to the sec- tion of 1–2 l of HCl at a concentration of 150–160 mmol/l into the interior of the stomach. In order to facilitate the production of acid, the parietal cell relies on the generation of a high + concentration of H ions that are transported into the lumen of the gland. This process is fa- + + cilitated by activation of the gastric H ,K -ATPase, which translocates to the apical pole of + – the parietal cell. K as well as ATP hydrolysis and Cl all play critical roles in the activation + + of gastric H ,K -ATPase and are essential for the functioning of the enzyme (Reenstra and Forte 1990). This review will examine the classical proteins that have been linked to acid secretion as well as some recently identi?ed proteins that may modulate gastric acid secretion, in - dition we discuss the known secretagogues, and their receptors including a new receptor, which upon stimulation can lead to acid secretion.

Book Description
Neurobiology and Physiology of the Endocannabinoid System offers readers a comprehensive reference on the neurobiology of this system and the use of cannabimimetic compounds to induce neurological changes and confer symptom relief. With sections on both natural and synthetic compounds, the book's broad coverage allows readers to learn about their use with multiple conditions, as well as the working biology of the endocannabinoid system, its receptors and its ligands. This volume provides a platform for research on the effects of this system and its modulation in brain function and neurological dysfunction. - Summarizes research on the working neurobiology of the endocannabinoid system - Contains chapter abstracts, key facts, a dictionary and a summary - Covers both natural cannabinoids and synthetic or exogenous cannabimimetics - Includes conditions like headache, anxiety, stress and neuroinflammation - Discusses system modulation in the context of pain, traumatic brain injury and obesity

Electronic Expectations

Book Description
This book, first published in 1999, analyses the convergence of financial, technical, and public policy considerations that turned what seemed like science fiction twenty years ago into a library fact of life today. It shows that while electronic publication greatly speeds issuance of important scientific results of enduring value, it also has the potential to lower the economic threshold at which crank papers and marginal publications can gain a wide, if sadly misled audience, in the short run. It demonstrates that while scientists invented the web, they no longer control it, and that even the very largest research organizations, libraries, publishers, and journal aggregators, will, to a substantial degree, be at the technological and economic mercy of commercial users of the web.
