Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Stephen Almagno’s career as a professor of library science began at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. In 1990, he became the first professor in the United States to teach an information ethics course in a library and information science program. Almagno’s work in the area of information ethics was recognized at the 2001 “Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century” symposium held at the University of Memphis on October 18–21, 2001, upon the occasion of his retirement from the University of Pittsburgh. The essays in this book were presented at the symposium honoring Almagno. The first section of the book features papers that pay special tribute to Almagno. The second contains papers on library issues and ethics, such as the ethics of electronic information in China and eastern Europe, the organizations that represent information professionals, the ethics of user privacy in the digital library, and ethical implications of e-commerce, to name just a few. The third section covers topical issues, such as Internet plagiarism, ethical hacking and the security justification, social democracy and information media policy, and the ethics of dialogue, among others.

The Making of Europe

The Making of Europe PDF Author: Christopher Dawson
Publisher: CUA Press
ISBN: 9780813210834
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Christopher Dawson concludes that the period of the fourth to the eleventh centuries, commonly known as the Dark Ages, is not a barren prelude to the creative energy of the medieval world. Instead, he argues that it is better described as "ages of dawn" for it is in this rich and confused period that the complex and creative interaction of the Roman empire, the Christian Church, the classical tradition, and barbarous societies provided the foundation for a vital, unified European culture. In an age of fragmentation and the emergence of new nationalist forces, Dawson argued that if "our civilization is to survive, it is essential that it should develop a common European consciousness and sense of historic and organic unity." But he was clear that this unity required sources deeper and more complex than the political and economic movements on which so many had come to depend, and he insisted, prophetically, that Europe would need to recover its Christian roots if it was to survive. In a time of cultural and political ambiguity, The making of Europe is an indispensable work for understanding not only the rich sources but also the contemporary implications of the very idea of Europe.

The Pius War

The Pius War PDF Author: David G. Dalin
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739145967
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
In the brutal fight that has raged in recent years over the reputation of Pope Pius XII_leader of the Catholic Church during World War II, the Holocaust, and the early years of the Cold War_the task of defending the Pope has fallen primarily to reviewers. These reviewers formulated a brilliant response to the attack on Pius, but their work was scattered in various newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals_making it nearly impossible for the average reader to gauge the results. In The Pius War, Weekly Standard's Joseph Bottum has joined with Rabbi David G. Dalin to gather a representative and powerful sample of these reviews, deliberately chosen from a wide range of publications. Together with a team of professors, historians, and other experts, the reviewers conclusively investigate the claims attacking Pius XII. The Pius War, and a detailed annotated bibliography that follows, will prove to be a definitive tool for scholars and students_destined to become a major resource for anyone interested in questions of Catholicism, the Holocaust, and World War II.
