Archaeology of Culture Contact and Colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America

Archaeology of Culture Contact and Colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America PDF Author: Pedro Paulo A. Funari
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319080695
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
The volume contributes to disrupt the old grand narrative of cultural contact and colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America in a wide and complete sense. This edited volume aims at exploring contact archaeology in the modern era. Archaeology has been exploring the interaction of peoples and cultures from early times, but only in the last few decades have cultural contact and material world been recognized as crucial elements to understanding colonialism and the emergence of modernity. Modern colonialism studies pose questions in need of broader answers. This volume explores these answers in Spanish and Portuguese America, comprising present-day Latin America and formerly Spanish territories now part of the United States. The volume addresses studies of the particular features of Spanish-Portuguese colonialism, as well as the specificities of Iberian colonization, including hybridism, religious novelties, medieval and modern social features, all mixed in a variety of ways unique and so different from other areas, particularly the Anglo-Saxon colonial thrust. Cultural contact studies offer a particularly in-depth picture of the uniqueness of Latin America in terms of its cultural mixture. This volume particularly highlights local histories, revealing novelty, diversity, and creativity in the conformation of the new colonial realities, as well as presenting Latin America as a multicultural arena, with astonishing heterogeneity in thoughts, experiences, practices, and, material worlds.

Utopias in Latin America

Utopias in Latin America PDF Author: Juan Pro
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781845199821
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Latin America has historically been a fertile ground where utopian projects, movements, and experiments could take root and thrive. Each of the thirteen authors in this collective volume address a particular case or specific aspect of Latin American utopianism from colonial times to the present day. The America that the Spanish and Portuguese discovered became, from the sixteenth century onwards, a space in which it was possible to imagine the widest variety of forms of human coexistence. Utopias in Latin America reconsiders the sense and understanding of utopias in various historical frames: the discovery of indigenous cultures and their natural environments; the foundation of new towns and cities in a vast colonial territory; the experimental communities of nineteenth-century utopian socialists and European exiled intellectuals; and the innovative formulae that attempts to get beyond twentieth-century capitalism.

Learning to Write

Learning to Write PDF Author: Gunther Kress
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134908288
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
First published in 1982, this influential and classic text poses two questions: what is it that a child learns when he or she learns to write? What can we learn about children, society and ourselves, by looking at this process? The book is based on a close analysis of a series of written texts by primary school children and is written for student teachers with little or no knowledge of linguistics. In this new edition, Gunther Kress has made extensive revisions in the light of recent developments in linguistics and in education. The theoretical focus is now a social semiotic one, which allows a fundamental rethinking of issues such as 'preliteracy' and broad social and cultural questions around the making of texts.

Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria PDF Author: Aloysio Da S. Ferrão-Filho
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781624179662
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Cyanobacteria are procariotic organisms (like bacteria) that are long living on Earth (about 3.5 billion years). These tiny creatures have adapted to several kinds of habitats and climates showing a huge adaptive irradiance. Their huge plasticity makes them a successful organism, able to colonise different habitats and climates. They can be found both in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, from poles to deserts and from lakes to the seas over the world. Another remarkable characteristic of cayanobacteria is their capacity to produce several bioactive compounds, such as toxins and allelochemicals, which makes them even stronger competitors. Cyanobacterial blooms have been considered a serious problem in lakes and reservoirs world-wide, threatening wild life, cattle and humans as well. This book covers a series of up-to-date topics in cyabobacterial research, such as the role of cyanotoxins in species interactions, toxicology and ecotoxicology, risk assessment and management of toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins.

Contrastive Phraseology

Contrastive Phraseology PDF Author: Paola Cotta Ramusino
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 9781527542181
Category : Grammar, Comparative and general
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This volume is addressed to researchers in the field of phraseology, and to teachers, translators and lexicographers. It is a collection of essays offering a comprehensive, modern analysis of phrasemes, embracing a wide range of subjects and themes, from linguistic, both applied and theoretical, to cultural aspects. The contrastive approach underlying this variety of themes allows the divergences and analogies between phraseological units in two or more languages to be outlined. The languages compared here are both major and minor, European and non-European, and the text includes contrastive analyses of the most commonly investigated languages (French-German, English-Spanish, Russian-German), as well as some less frequently investigated languages (like Ukrainian, Romanian, Georgian and Thai), which are not as well-represented in phraseological description, despite their scientific interest.

Urban Transformations in the Late Antique West: Materials, Agents, and Models

Urban Transformations in the Late Antique West: Materials, Agents, and Models PDF Author: André Carneiro
Publisher: Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra / Coimbra University Press
ISBN: 989261898X
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
This volume is the fruit of a highly productive international research gathering academic and professional (field- and museum) colleagues to discuss new results and approaches, recent finds and alternative theoretical assessments of the period of transition and transformation of classical towns in Late Antiquity. Experts from an array of modern countries attended and presented to help compare and contrast critically archaeologies of diverse regions and to debate the qualities of the archaeology and the current modes of study. While a number of papers inevitably focused on evidence available for both Spain and Portugal, we were delighted to have a spread of contributions that extended the picture to other territories in the Late Roman West and Mediterranean. The emphasis was very much on the images presented by archaeology (rescue and research works, recent and past), but textual data were also brought into play by various contributors.
