Book Description
The subject of the book is of great importance from the point of view of the current situation in Europe. The purpose of the book is to identify the legal effects of the renationalisation process on the EU and its Member States. The concept of renationalisation is expressed through MS's aim to verify the relationship with the EU. The thesis for the book is the return of renationalisation tendencies in the area of the Single Market, which is supported by, among others, an open criticism of the foundations of EU integration or considerations on withdrawal from the EU by some MS and the problems caused by migration and immigration. Part of the book involved an analysis of the internal market freedoms give a clear indication of the effects of the continuing trend of renationalisation on consumers, workers, entrepreneurs and MS. A definite influence on the above is the new, more dynamic, competition between Member States for leadership in sectorial EU policies (eg energy or agriculture), in certain areas (the euro) and the Union as a whole.

The European Union in the 21st Century
Author: Stefano Micossi
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789290799290
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The contributors to this book are all members of EuropEos, a multidisciplinary group of jurists, economists, political scientists, and journalists in an ongoing forum discussing European institutional issues. The essays analyze emerging shifts in common policies, institutional settings, and legitimization, sketching out possible scenarios for the European Union of the 21st century. They are grouped into three sections, devoted to economics and consensus, international projection of the Union, and the institutional framework. Even after the major organizational reforms introduced to the EU by the new Treaty of Lisbon, which came into force in December 2009, Europe appears to remain an entity in flux, in search of its ultimate destiny. In line with the very essence of EuropEos, the views collected in this volume are sometimes at odds in their specific conclusions, but they stem from a common commitment to the European construction.

EU Citizenship and Federalism
Author: Dimitry Kochenov
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108146112
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 869
Book Description
Kochenov's definitive collection examines the under-utilised potential of EU citizenship, proposing and defending its position as a systemic element of EU law endowed with foundational importance. Leading experts in EU constitutional law scrutinise the internal dynamics in the triad of EU citizenship, citizenship rights and the resulting vertical delimitation of powers in Europe, analysing the far-reaching constitutional implications. Linking the constitutional question of federalism and citizenship, the volume establishes an innovative new framework where these rights become agents and rationales of European integration and legal change, located beyond the context of the internal market and free movement. It maps the role of citizenship in this shifting landscape, outlining key options for a Europe of the future.

Executive-legislative (Im)balance in the European Union
Author: Diane Fromage
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1509930027
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
Ten years after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, has executive predominance in EU-related matters disappeared? How have executive-legislative relations in the EU evolved over a crisis-ridden decade, from the financial and migration crises, to Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic? The Lisbon Treaty could be expected to lead to the re-balancing of powers in favour of parliaments, for it significantly enhanced the roles of both the European Parliament and national parliaments. A decade later the contributions to this edited volume examine – for the first time in such an extensive breadth and from a multi-level and cross-policy perspective – whether this has actually materialised. They highlight that diverging tendencies may be observed, and that important variations over time have occurred, depending particularly on the occurrence of crises. As stated in the fascinating epilogue by Peter Lindseth (University of Connecticut School of Law), this is an 'admirably coherent collective volume, whose contributions provide an excellent overview of key aspects of executive-legislative relations in the European system since the Treaty of Lisbon'. This edited volume will hence be of interest to both academics and practitioners interested in future reforms designed at the European and national levels to improve the EU's democratic quality.
