At the adoption of our Constitution, a period of fort -five years, there were but three banks iirtlie United States, the amount of whose capital I do not now recollect, but it was very small. In this short space they have increased to four hundred and fifty, With a capital of one hundred and forty-five mil lions, as has already been stated - an in crease exceeding nearly a hundred fold the proportionate increase of our wealth and population, as great as the have been.
