Book Description
Excerpt from Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 25 Stanley complained he had outlived his friends, and in the year 1624 he was constrained to go to Spain, in his old age, having now seen ninety-five years. This is not very precise as to the year when he had seen this ex treme age, and, unluckily, the account of the funeral wants the date of the year. In Tong's Visitation, 1532 3, Rowland Stanley has entered himself as unmarried, and we therefore place Stanley's birth in 1534, and take the now of Wadsworth to mean 1629, the date Of his book. Book Description
Henry D. Rack is one of the most profound historians of the Methodist movement in modern times. He has spent a lifetime researching and writing about the rise and significance of John Wesley and his Methodist followers in the eighteenth century and has also uncovered the historical significance of the Methodist Church in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Collected in Perfecting Perfection are thirteen essays honouring the life and scholarship of Dr. Rack from a host of international scholars in the field. The topics range from Wesley's view of grace in the eighteenth century to the dynamic intersection of the Methodist and Tractarian movements in the nineteenth century. Ultimately, the collection of essays offered here in honour of Dr. Rack will be engaging and provocative to those considering Methodist Studies in the present and future generations.

The Medical Pioneers of Nineteenth Century Lancaster

The Medical Pioneers of Nineteenth Century Lancaster PDF Author: Quenton Wessels
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527524876
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
Modern medicine in England as we know it today is chiefly the product of the scientific developments of the nineteenth century. These advances included improved sanitation, the acceptance of the germ theory of disease as a result of the emergence of microbiology, and the advent of painless and routine surgical procedures. How then did medicine evolve in Lancaster during the nineteenth century? The focus here is the history of medicine in Lancaster and a community of practice amongst a few medical professionals who shaped Lancaster’s medical landscape. The reader will be introduced to these remarkable medical men and their names will gradually become familiar. Many of these individuals were second and even third generation surgeons and physicians. Background to these pioneers, as well as their successes and failures, is sketched within the context of Lancaster’s socio-economic environment and growth as an industrial town. This volume also marks the main medical events in Lancaster, including the establishment of a Dispensary, which evolved into the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, the Public Health movement and the rise of the Asylums.
