Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Writers of England These sketches are not offered as a History of English Religious Literature. Every reader will probably wonder why certain writers are included and certain others are omitted. The selection of names has been dictated partly by personal preference and partly by limits of space. But the selection, however arbitrary, will, it is hoped, be found fairly representative of different phases of belief and life which have appeared in successive epochs of English Christianity. It has not been possible to bring the Victorian era within the compass of the volume. A few of the chapters have already appeared in the form of magazine articles. Book Description
Excerpt from A Retrospect of the Religious Life of England: Or, the Church, Puritanism, and Free Inquiry I have not said this, with any view of evading the censures to which, with the fairest criticism, the following pages will, I am quite aware, be justly liable, but only to protect them from the gratuitous injury of being tried by too high a standard. I offer them as little more than a sketch - exhibiting the general outline and pro minent features of the historical development of the religious life Of England. I make no preten sion to deep and original research. The facts recited or alluded to, are such as are familiar to every student of our national history. What I here present of my own, is simply the conception of those facts - the relation I have ventured to establish between them - the principles to which I have thought they might be referred - and the inferences which they have seemed to me to yield. I have wished to find out, if I could, the meaning of our religious history. Whether I have in any degree succeeded, the reader will judge. I may, however, state, that I have endeavoured to take my facts from the most authentic sources acces sible to me, and that the authorities immediately quoted, are those which I have either read or con. Faith Or Fear

Faith Or Fear PDF Author: Donald Hankey

Book Description
Excerpt from Faith or Fear: An Appeal to the Church of England On this common basis each author has made his contribution to the book, in complete independence of all the others. While this book was passing through the press the Westminster Gazette on June 21st, under the general title What is Wrong with the Churches 7 published a remarkable article on The People and the Church, by Sir Harry Johnston. In that article the writer speaks of the partial frankness of certain of the leaders of the Church in discussing the relation of the Church and the People. He goes on to declare that the reason why people stay away from Church - a reason which no professional clergyman or pastor will admit - is that much of the traditions, teachings and precepts of the Christian Churches are entirely out of date. Those who read this book will see that its authors are to a great extent in agreement with this writer, and at the same time will probably acquit them of the charge of being only partial in their frankness. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Thought in England in the Nineteenth Century It is a felt difficulty with this kind of history, that the reader may be sometimes at a loss to know who speaks. The rule has been followed of giving every writer's Opinions, as far as practicable and compatible with condensation in his own words, or where this is not done, the author speaks in the name of the writer except when it is very clear that he is speaking in his own person. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, From the Reformation to the End of Last Century, Vol. 3: A Contribution to the History of Theology At the end of a work so extensive as this, an author, I suppose, always feels how much better it would be done if he had it to do again. When I began I had but a partial knowledge of the ground to be traversed, and of a few important parts I knew nothing. This is the cause of one or two irregularities which otherwise would have been avoided. Some writers, for instance, are noticed at more length than others who are perhaps of greater importance. In the preface to my essay on Pantheism I have recorded the circumstances which determined me to devote some years to the special study of theology. When I came to London, in 1859, I began a course of reading with the object of inquiring into the nature of revelation and the evidences by which it is supported. At the end of four years I had formed a plan of something like a complete history of theology, which would set forth the special character of Christianity and its relation to other religions. In the spring of 1863 I showed the outlines of my work to the late Professor Maurice, who had gone over large portions of the same field, and whose writings had been of great service to me. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to the End of Last Century; A Contribution to the History of Theology It was stated in the Preface to the First Volume that the object of this work was to trace the history of religious thought in England since the Reformation. I then intimated that I was not writing a philosophy of the history of religion, but a part of the history itself. Merely to have given my own conclusions, or my own theories, would have been easier for me, and perhaps more agreeable to the reader. But I preferred collecting and arranging material which would not only illustrate the stand-point from which I was writing, but also have a permanent value in itself. It has been suggested by a reviewer that it would have added to the interest of the work if I had said more about the characters of the men of whom I have occasion to write, and less about their books. It was also suggested that I might have traced the connection of doctrines prominent at certain times with the same or kindred doctrines in other countries. Both these things would doubtless have been interesting, but they are beyond my province. I fixed the limits, that the work, within these limits, might be as complete as I could make it. A history of ideas could not be expected to have the same interest as a history of events; and when confined to England, there was a necessity for details that will often seem tedious. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, Vol. 1: From the Reformation to the End of Last Century; A Contribution to the History of Theology This is not a work which requires a long preface. The title-page sufficiently indicates its Object. It is not written to promote the interests Of any party, and the utmost effort has been made to preserve fairness and impartiality. It is impossible, I apprehend, for any man to write on contro verted subjects, even in the way of history, without indi cating his own bias. It is not perhaps desirable, for that bias, however little it may appear, is really the stand-point from which he writes, and sometimes the key to his object in writing. I have tried to avoid making inferences, wish ing rather to state facts honestly, believing that in every case the inferences which I should make, will be made in evitably by all impartial minds. I am dissatisfied, and I suppose most men are, with the spirit in which the history of religion in England is generally written. If it is the work of a Churchman, it takes the form of a defence of the Church of England; if by a Nonconformist, it is a defence Of nonconformity. And thus a subject which, in proper hands, might be prolific for good, is sacrificed to the glorifi cation of a sect or a party. Even the external facts of his tory refuse to be thus treated, and much more the thoughts which underlie the facts. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short and Plain Way to the Faith and Church It is intended that the third and ensuing volumes shall appear at less distant intervals, and that each, on an average, shall be much larger than the present. In the mean time, the humble efforts, now made to republish such of the more valuable works of the Catholic writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as may be considered suitable to the present times, will, it is hoped, meet with sufficient encouragement from the public, to enable the projectors of this design to carry out their intentions to the extent originally proposed.
