Fernando de los Ríos Urruti (Ronda, 1879 – Nueva York, 1949) es uno de los pensadores más originales y relevantes del socialismo español de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Discípulo de Francisco Giner de los Ríos y estrechamente vinculado con los proyectos educativos de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, fue catedrático de Derecho Político en la Universidad de Granada, diputado a Cortes por el PSOE, ministro de Justicia, de Instrucción Pública y de Estado en la Segunda República española, embajador en Washington durante la Guerra Civil y, finalmente, ministro de Estado del Gobierno republicano del exilio. Al final de su vida ejerció la docencia en la prestigiosa New School for Social Research de Nueva York. Si bien es conocido en España por su propuesta teórica de un socialismo humanista no marxista y de profunda raigambre liberal, no lo es tanto por sus sugestivos trabajos sobre la España del siglo XVI. Los textos que integran la presente obra constituyeron en su día una aportación fundamental en este sentido. La fusión de los fines de la Iglesia y del Estado durante la monarquía imperial de Felipe II, vislumbre temprano de lo que andando el tiempo sería la esencia de los Estados totalitarios de la Europa de entreguerras; la contribución de Francisco de Vitoria y los teólogos y juristas españoles del XVI a la creación del Derecho internacional y las consecuencias de la acción colonizadora y conquistadora de América constituyen la variada temática de los ensayos aquí reunidos. Esta tercera edición ampliada incluye un texto hasta ahora inédito en España y no recogido en las Obras completas del autor.

Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture.
