Book Description
Given the remarkable circumstances of finding a narrowboat to set up home in, and then discovering they had skills that made living and working anywhere on the water possible, it wasn’t surprising that Giles Byford and Jill Parkinson felt blessed by life afloat. It was a life that suited them and, after several very happy years wandering England’s inland waterways, they decided to commit to a brand new barge both suited to continental Europe and able to get there under its own steam. And so they set about building Hawthorn, which they hoped to spend the rest of their lives on. Initially all was well and it seemed their good fortune was constant and their dreams were coming together perfectly. And then, quite suddenly, it all unravelled... Reedbound is largely about what followed: how the terrifying voyage across the Irish Sea became an act of faith that contrasted with a gentle westward wander along an empty canal to the River Shannon and the heart of Ireland’s waterways. And how, despite feeling vulnerable and nervous, they were determined the best way to recover their confidence in life afloat was to avoid doing any research and simply trust that all would be well. This unusual approach delivered constant surprises, adventures, unexpected spaces and the company of other misfits. Giles began to write – initially a widely read blog, and then articles for waterways magazines – and Jill finally had time to explore her interest in art; the success of which can be seen in the numerous illustrations that are a feature of Reedbound. Reedbound compares and contrasts two inland waterway systems – England and Ireland – and two boating cultures. It’s about Giles and Jill’s approach to travel and life, which is as rare as taking a barge across the Irish Sea. It’s also about the delight of experiencing the Irish landscape and culture through naïve but willing eyes.

The World's Earliest Music: Traced to Its Beginnings in Ancient Lands

The World's Earliest Music: Traced to Its Beginnings in Ancient Lands PDF Author: Hermann Smith
Publisher: Library of Alexandria
ISBN: 1465610634
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
THE human interest in the past never dies, its hold upon us increases with the growing years, and every gain that is made to the store of knowledge does but add to the zest with which we search for more; nation vies with nation for the glory of recovering relics of life that are strewn along the path of death. From the sands and from the tombs, from the paintings and the graven tablets, and from the faces of the rocks we rehabilitate the vision of the mighty dead; a recovered name is a page of a people’s history, and we seek with renewal of eagerness for the pages that should follow or precede. The long buried spoils of temples and palaces excite the imagination, the grandeur of gold and silver, the wealth of art and ornament, and the resplendent jewels, appeal to the love of power and of possession, active or dormant in every heart; yet not less do we treasure the fragile mementoes, the simplest things, rendered up from the past that were the surroundings of domestic life, that speak to us of the household ways, and of the personal pursuits of the men, and of the adornment of the women who for untold ages have ever sought “their pleasure in their power to charm.” The instruments of music that in the remoter ages of the past were in daily use are seldom found, for the nature of the materials of which they were constructed was adverse to their preservation; those that have been found are rarely in their original condition, perfect in all their parts, or suitable for being put to the test of playing, and the resource left to us is to obtain some approximate condition by means of models, and then adapt some modern method for eliciting sound, which method as near as we can judge shall be the counterpart of the original device.

Detroit Tigers Gone Wild: Mischief, Crimes and Hard Time

Detroit Tigers Gone Wild: Mischief, Crimes and Hard Time PDF Author: George Hunter
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467143294
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
The Detroit Tigers came out of the womb scratching and snarling. Early owner James D. Burns orchestrated the only known arrest of a journalist while covering a game. It's the only Major League franchise to sign a star player out of prison, which happened twice. Ex-Tigers have done time for crimes ranging from armed robbery to racketeering-and worse. One tried to burn and dismember a group of men after they kidnapped his mother. Another threatened to blow up a cruise ship unless he was paid a sizeable ransom. And Detroit legend Ty Cobb ran afoul of the law several times during his brilliant, tumultuous and often mischaracterized career. Join Detroit News writer George Hunter on a foray into the darkest, unruliest and sometimes funniest moments in Tigers history.
