Economic Investigations in Twentieth-Century Detective Fiction

Economic Investigations in Twentieth-Century Detective Fiction PDF Author: Yan Zi-Ling
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317146166
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
In his study of Golden Age and hard-boiled detective fiction from 1890 to 1950, Yan Zi-Ling argues that these two subgenres can be distinguished not only by theme and style, but by the way they structure knowledge, value, and productive labour. Using the detective as a reference point and enactor of socially based interests, Yan shows that Golden Age texts are distinguished by their conservationism (and not only by their conservatism), with the detectives’ actions serving to stabilize institutions with specific ideological aims. In contrast, the criminal investigations of the hard-boiled detective, who is poorly aligned with institutions and strong interest groups, reveal the fragility of the status quo in the face of escalating cycles of violence. Key to Yan’s discussion are theories of exchange, value, and the gift, the latter of which he suggests is more akin to detective work than is wage labour. Analyzing texts by a wide range of authors that includes Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Dorothy Sayers, Raoul Whitfield, George Harmon Coxe, and Mickey Spillane, Yan demonstrates that the detective’s truth-generating function, most often characterized as a process of discovery rather than creation, is in fact crucial to the institutional and class-based interests that he or she serves.

Book Description
Elynia is a lyrically-charged debut that dissects the moments that make up the lives of its interrelated characters. The title story examines four separate generations of nameless characters whose varied struggles unfold in a kaleidoscope of human need. An immigrant shoe-man works away his life in a dying town, witnessing his son wrongly arrested by a man whose shoes he regularly shines. And that son watches his friend betray the memory of a departed mother by stealing her now-sacred makeup for a drunken joke. That friend then marries a waitress who secretly loves another man who is perpetually stuck atoning for his past by meticulously refurbishing a house. The atoner was once a painter whose works were rejected by his one love, the granddaughter of the woman who boards the hapless shoe-man after a fire takes everything from him. Being the only one named, Elynia paradoxically emerges as the greater obscurity that envelopes the nameless yet distinguished

Book Description
The motel manager momentarily surveyed the young man up and down. "Passing through or here on business perhaps?" The man remained motionless, but for his hand scribbling over the credit card slip. Raising his head for an eye to eye, "I suppose you could say that. Spent some time looking at property for sale around Smithson County, I believe it's called? Sound right?" "That's it," complied the manager, studying the credit receipt through the smoke screen made by the cigarette between his lips. "Mr. Woodson. You wouldn't be interested in becoming a motel owner?" He gave the young man a sly grin. "No, no. Grew up in a place similar to the smaller towns around here. Just thought I'd check out the market. Know one thing, some pretty sassy babes selling Real Estate around here." He gave the manager a wink, turned and butting his suitcase against the screen edged outside. Walking toward his car, he spoke to himself. "Sassy and sweet tasting too " He laughed aloud. Inside the car he removed the business card from the visor. He pressed it on his nostrils inhaling deeply. Then licked it with his tongue. "Marie, honey, there's nothing like the taste of perfume in the morning. 'Midnight Passion, ' I believe she called it."
