Book Description
This book investigates the transposition of short stories to drama in the works of two leading Sicilian authors, Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) and Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936), focussing specifically on their representation of women. De Francisci argues that, once the female characters are transposed into the dramatic genre, they gain a voice of their own and thus become 'new' women whose antecedents can be traced to Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House (1879). In uncovering the voices of the 'new' women, the book draws attention to the early actresses, namely Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) and Marta Abba (1900-1988), who were instrumental in transforming the female characters from their fictional existence on the page to their physical enactment on the stage, and were key influences on Verga and Pirandello respectively. By revealing the evolution of the female voice in the two authors' works and the added enrichment of this voice as a result of its transposition to the dramatic genre, the book offers new insights into why the narrative genre is so well suited to Verga's preoccupations, why the theatrical form is more effective in articulating Pirandello's umorismo, and what Pirandello's adaptations reveal about the way in which he comes to negotiate the transition from Realism (or verismo) to Modernism. Enza De Francisci is Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Glasgow.

Luigi Pirandello in the Theatre
Author: Susan Bassnett
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134351216
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
First Published in 1993. Contemporary Theatre Studies is a book series of special interest to everyone involved in theatre. This collection of documents is the first attempt in English to bring together a body of material on Luigi Pirandello as multi-faceted man of the theatre. Because relatively few of his works have been easily available to English language readers, he is thought of most frequently as a playwright, the author of Six Characters in Search of an Author and Henry IV in particular, and his contribution to theatre, both in theory and in practice, has tended to be overlooked. Emphasising his role as a director, the book traces the rise and fall of his own theatre company, the Teatro d’Arte where he struggled to instil new practices and comments on Pirandello’s attempts during the years of Fascism to give Italy a national theatre in a European context.

Six Characters in Search of an Author
Author: Luigi Pirandello
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781724436368
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 76
Book Description
Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello (Author), Edward Storer (Translator) One of the major figures of modern theater, Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) wrote dramas and satires that sparked controversy with their radical departures from conventional theatrical techniques. His most celebrated work, Six Characters in Search of an Author, embodies the Nobel Prize-winning playwright's innovations by presenting an open-ended drama on a stage without sets. First performed in 1923, this intellectual comedy introduces six individuals to a stage where a company of actors has assembled for a rehearsal. Claiming to be the incomplete, unused creations of an author's imagination, they demand lines for a story that will explain the details of their lives. In ensuing scenes, these "real-life characters," all professing to be part of an extended family, produce a drama of sorts - punctuated by disagreements, interruptions, and arguments. In the end they are dismissed by the irate manager, their dilemma unsolved and the "truth" a matter of individual viewpoints. A tour de force exploring the many faces of reality, this classic is now available in an inexpensive edition that will be welcomed by amateur theatrical groups as well as students of drama. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The Drama of Luigi Pirandello
Author: Domenico Vittorini
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 1512821284
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
Pirandello, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is a little known to most English readers. Too few of his plays and stories have been translated. This hook, therefore, serves the double purpose of introducing the Italian genius through a summary of all his dramatic work and interpreting his accomplishments fron an artistic viewpoint. As a background for his criticism, the Domenico Vittorini shows first how Pirandello's compassionate pessimism and tragic mockery resulted from his own tortured existence and in what way his art is relates to Italian literary tradition and contemporary thought. Proceeding chronologically, Pirandello's growth is traced from the elementary naturalism of his early writing, through his more reflective plays, to the crowning achievements of later years in which dramatic situations are approached from a highly intellectualized point of view.

Pirandello and Film
Author: Nina daVinci Nichols
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 9780803233362
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) is one of the preeminent figures of the modern European theater. His masterpiece, Six Characters in Search of an Author, set loose a riot during its first performance in Rome in 1921. This play about six unfortunate characters abandoned by their author in the middle of a tawdry drama, is an unsettling, supremely self-conscious work that is ultimately about theatrical artifice and artistic creation itself. Pirandello and Film examines Pirandello's many efforts-none of them finally successful-to transform Six Characters into a movie. The authors examine Pirandello's views on film and its relation to theater, his varying approaches to creating a film adaptation of Six Characters, and the efforts of directors and film moguls in Germany and Hollywood to fashion a cinematic version of the play. The book also presents an array of important documents, including some that have never before appeared in English: a Prologue (or prose sketch) for a 1926 film; a Scenario (a more detailed prose sketch) prepared by Pirandello and Adolph Lantz in the late 1920s for a German film version of Six Characters; an English-language film sketch written in 1935 by Pirandello and Saul Colin; and a letter from Max Reinhardt and the German emigri Hollywood film director Joseph von Sternberg to Saul Colin regarding the proposed film treatment of the play. These documents, together with the authors' critical text, provide a detailed portrait of Pirandello's developing view of film as an appropriate medium for his revolutionary dramatic innovations. Nina daVinci Nichols, a professor of English at Rutgers University, is the author of Ariadne's Lives, Man, Myth & Monument, and two novels: Moira's Room and Child of the Night. Jana O'Keefe Bazzoni, an associate professor of speech at Baruch College, has published articles in The Luigi Pirandello Companion, Performing Arts Journal, and Modern Drama. Maurice Charney, a professor of English at Rutgers University, is the author of All of Shakespeare, Comedy High and Low, and Sexual Fiction.
