Book Description
Excerpt from Recitation as a Factor in Memorizing The present investigation was begun in the Psychological Laboratory of the University of California in the spring of 1916. The experiments in which children served as subjects were conducted in a public school in Oakland, California, while those upon adults were, for the most part, carried out in the Psychological Laboratory of Columbia University. The writer has been fortunate in having enjoyed, during the course of the work, endless encouragement, suggestions, and assistance from a large number of people. To Mr. N. Ricciardi, Principal of the school visited, I am indebted for the privilege of conducting the experiments upon his charges as well as for the ready help in arranging details for the work. To the many teachers whose class-rooms I invaded, I am indebted for the kindliest toleration and for a great deal of valuable assistance. My debt of gratitude to Professors G. M. Stratton and Warner Brown of the University of California and to Professors J. McKeen Cattell, R.S. Woodworth, E. L. Thorndike, H. L. Hollingworth, and Dr. A. T. Poffenberger of Columbia University, is very great. To my friend Charles E. Martin, I am indebted for valuable suggestions and criticisms in the preparation of the manuscript. Book Description
Excerpt from The Recitation To Teachers.- "The Recitation" has been given pamphlet form at the request of many teachers who have heard it in teachers' institutes. No effort has been made to describe just "How to Conduct a Recitation" by arranging in a formal order the steps of a recitation. In the hands of an incompetent or machine teacher, specific directions would soon degenerate into a dry, mechanical routine. No one can tell another just how he should do anything. However, an effort has been made to call the attention of young teachers to some of the characteristics of a good recitation. Heart Beats

Heart Beats PDF Author: Catherine Robson
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691119368
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Many people in Great Britain and the United States can recall elderly relatives who remembered long stretches of verse learned at school decades earlier, yet most of us were never required to recite in class. Heart Beats is the first book to examine how poetry recitation came to assume a central place in past curricular programs, and to investigate when and why the once-mandatory exercise declined. Telling the story of a lost pedagogical practice and its wide-ranging effects on two sides of the Atlantic, Catherine Robson explores how recitation altered the ordinary people who committed poems to heart, and changed the worlds in which they lived. Heart Beats begins by investigating recitation's progress within British and American public educational systems over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and weighs the factors that influenced which poems were most frequently assigned. Robson then scrutinizes the recitational fortunes of three short works that were once classroom classics: Felicia Hemans's "Casabianca," Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," and Charles Wolfe's "Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna." To conclude, the book considers W. E. Henley's "Invictus" and Rudyard Kipling's "If--," asking why the idea of the memorized poem arouses such different responses in the United States and Great Britain today. Focusing on vital connections between poems, individuals, and their communities, Heart Beats is an important study of the history and power of memorized poetry.
