L'orthodontie peut avoir un rôle préventif, interceptif ou correctif des malocclusions, dans le but d'améliorer la santé bucco-dentaire, l'esthétique du sourire et la stabilité occlusale des patients. Mais elle se doit également de rétablir un environnement fonctionnel correct afin d'harmoniser et d'optimiser la croissance chez l'enfant. La prise en charge des individus doit suivre un modèle bio psycho social, représentation de l'être humain dans sa globalité. Une revue systématique respectant les recommandations PRISMA-P a été réalisée. La recherche a identifié l'ensemble des publications issues de revues avec comité de lecture existantes. Les résultats ont été rédigés sous la forme d'une revue narrative, indiquant tous les indicateurs utilisés actuellement pour mettre en évidence la relation entre malocclusions et trouble des fonctions orales. La recherche a été menée avec les mots clés «orthodontic » « malocclusion » et « index » dans le but d'identifier les indicateurs utilisés dans la littérature pour établir une relation entre malocclusions et dysfonctions orales. 16 références nous ont permis de réaliser cette revue systématique. Le nombre de sujets inclus dans les études va de 42 à 3017 sujets avec une moyenne d'âge de 14,5 ans. D'une manière générale, cette revue systématique affirme que plus la malocclusion du sujet est sévère, plus l'impact fonctionnel est important et plus il y a un retentissement négatif sur la qualité de vie orale et générale du sujet. Cependant l'aspect esthétique reste primordial, selon les études, sur la perception de bien être du patient. Le lien entre les malocclusions d'un sujet et leurs conséquences sur les fonctions orales est peu recherché dans la littérature bien que celles-ci aient un retentissement sur la qualité de vie de l'individu. Quand il l'est, l'évaluation est réalisée de manière subjective avec des outils psychométriques la plupart du temps. Il est important que les praticiens appréhendent les risques et les conséquences aussi bien esthétiques que fonctionnelles et sociales des malocclusions sur la santé des personnes, tout en analysant les bénéfices médicaux attendus.
