Book Description
It is less than 80 years since John Newport Langley first proposed the role of "receptive substances" as the site of drug action from his obser vations on the effects of nicotine and curare at the myoneural junction. The many advances in our understanding of receptor biology that have occurred during the intervening period mirror the extraordinary growth of knowledge in the biological sciences and in cell and molecular biology in particular. Receptor biology, in common with many other topics in contemporary biology, is on the threshold of a transition from being a descriptive, phenomenological discipline to one in which underlying mechanisms and regulatory principles can be defined with increasing pre cision. This change, together with the evolution of powerful analytical techniques and timely convergence of ideas from a number of previously separate fields of inquiry, is generating an increasingly unified theoretical and experimental framework for the study of receptor function. These themes, and the mood of anticipation that a real understanding of receptor function in health and disease is emerging, are reflected in in this volume, which summarizes the proceedings of the Sec the papers ond Smith Kline & French Research Symposium on New Horizons in Therapeutics held in Philadelphia in 1984.

Book Description
The NMDA receptor plays a critical role in the development of the central nervous system and in adult neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Therefore, it is not surprising that this receptor has been widely studied. However, despite the importance of rhythms for the sustenance of life, this aspect of NMDAR function remains poorly studied. Written

Book Description
An essential text, this is a fully updated second edition of a classic, now in two volumes. It provides rapid access to information on molecular pharmacology for research scientists, clinicians and advanced students. With the A-Z format of over 2,000 entries, around 350 authors provide a complete reference to the area of molecular pharmacology. The book combines the knowledge of classic pharmacology with the more recent approach of the precise analysis of the molecular mechanisms by which drugs exert their effects. Short keyword entries define common acronyms, terms and phrases. In addition, detailed essays provide in-depth information on drugs, cellular processes, molecular targets, techniques, molecular mechanisms, and general principles.

Book Description
This all-new edition of a classic text has been thoroughly revised to keep pace with the rapid progress in signal transduction research. With didactic skill and clarity the author relates the observed biological phenomena to the underlying biochemical processes. Directed to advanced students, teachers, and researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology, this book describes the molecular basis of signal transduction, regulated gene expression, the cell cycle, tumorigenesis and apoptosis. "Provides a comprehensive account of cell signaling and signal transduction and, where possible, explains these processes at the molecular level" (Angewandte Chemie) "The clear and didactic presentation makes it a textbook very useful for students and researchers not familiar with all aspects of cell regulation." (Biochemistry) "This book is actually two books: Regulation and Signal Transduction." (Drug Research)

Book Description
Nuclear Receptors focuses on the structural analysis of nuclear receptors from the initial work using isolated protein domains to the more recent exciting developments investigating the conformational shape of full-length receptor complexes. The book also reviews the structure of key nuclear receptor co-regulatory proteins. It brings together, for the first time, a comprehensive review of nuclear receptor structure and the importance of receptor conformation underpinning allosteric regulation by different ligands (hormone, drugs, DNA response elements, protein-protein interactions) and receptor activity. The nuclear receptor superfamily, including receptors for steroid hormones and non-steroid ligands, are pivotal to normal physiology, regulating processes as diverse as reproduction, metabolism, the immune system and brain development. The first members of the family were cloned over 25 years ago, which heralded in the idea of a superfamily of intracellular receptor proteins that bound small molecule ligands: classical steroid hormones, vitamins, fatty acids and other products of metabolism. These signals are then transmitted through multiprotein receptor-DNA complexes, leading to the regulation of target genes, often in a cell-selective manner. The cloning of the receptor cDNAs also ushered in an era of unparalleled analysis of the mechanisms of action of these ligand-activated transcription factors.
