Book Description
The operational characteristics of several new solid state array detectors investigated in our laboratories have shown themselves to be highly suitable for application in analytical spectroscopy. The devices investigated to date are selected charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and charge injection devices (CIDs), each of which has certain unique capabilities which can be exploited for solving a variety of spectroscopic problems. Readout speed considerations when using sequential, pseudo-random, random, binning, and rapid scanning readout modes will be discussed. Optoelectronic characteristics of these devices including dynamic range, quantum efficiency, noise, resistance to blooming and lag will be contrasted to photodiode arrays, vidicons, and photomultiplier tubes. Several optical configurations for array detector spectrometers which effectively utilize the various device geometries including the latest generation echelle configuration will be presented. Design considerations including resolution, spectral coverage, detector element size, stray light, and image reduction will be discussed. Keywords: Optical spectroscopy; Multichannel techniques; Charge transfer devices.

Book Description
Recent investigations will be presented which demonstrate how new types of charge transfer device (CTD) array detectors can provide vastly superior performance to conventional approaches in a variety of optical spectroscopic applications. Operational characteristics of the two major classes of CTD's - charge coupled devices (CCD) and charge injection devices (CID) - will be briefly reviewed. Examples demonstrating the trade offs between the two classes of CTD's and their relative merits will be presented. Entirely new spectroscopic frontiers such as the 'Intelligent Atomic Emission Spectrometer' will be discussed. The ability to employ the vast amount of data available real time from a properly configured array detector can offer major advances in precision and accuracy. The concepts behind this approach, along with the advantages, will be presented. Keywords: Multichannel detectors, Charge injection detectors, Charge transfer devices, Electrooptical performance. (jhd).

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 569

Book Description
The emerging field of green analytical chemistry is concerned with the development of analytical procedures that minimize consumption of hazardous reagents and solvents, and maximize safety for operators and the environment. In recent years there have been significant developments in methodological and technological tools to prevent and reduce the deleterious effects of analytical activities; key strategies include recycling, replacement, reduction and detoxification of reagents and solvents. The Handbook of Green Analytical Chemistry provides a comprehensive overview of the present state and recent developments in green chemical analysis. A series of detailed chapters, written by international specialists in the field, discuss the fundamental principles of green analytical chemistry and present a catalogue of tools for developing environmentally friendly analytical techniques. Topics covered include: Concepts: Fundamental principles, education, laboratory experiments and publication in green analytical chemistry. The Analytical Process: Green sampling techniques and sample preparation, direct analysis of samples, green methods for capillary electrophoresis, chromatography, atomic spectroscopy, solid phase molecular spectroscopy, derivative molecular spectroscopy and electroanalytical methods. Strategies: Energy saving, automation, miniaturization and photocatalytic treatment of laboratory wastes. Fields of Application: Green bioanalytical chemistry, biodiagnostics, environmental analysis and industrial analysis. This advanced handbook is a practical resource for experienced analytical chemists who are interested in implementing green approaches in their work.
