In Literacy as Involvement, Deborah Brandt examines the cultural and social roots of the acts of reading and writing. The book asks, for example, whether literacy is a natural growth of or a radical shift from orality. It questions the contrary views that literacy is either the learning of the conventions of language or is better understood as heightened social ability. Finally, it raises the possibility that knowing how to read and write is actually understanding how we respond during the acts of reading and writing. This examination of literacy as process is also offered as a critique of prevailing theories of literacy advanced by such scholars as Walter J. Ong, S.J., David Olson, and E. D. Hirsch. They depict literacy as a textual experience that is socially and linguistically detached. Brandt critically examines the underlying assumptions from research on writing processes and argues that they call for a major reformation of prevailing conceptions of literacy. Over the last several decades, the study of discourse processes has moved from the complementary efforts characteristic of multidisciplinary research, to the explicitly integrative focus of interdisciplinary research. Some organizations have supported the methodological and conceptual merger of areas like literary studies, psychology, linguistics, and education. The Bible itself generates in the reader legitimate doubts. Those doubts do not concern wrong readings but rather the correct ones because every correct reading is always partial and unilateral. No reading ever catches and reflects the whole biblical horizon. That would be idolatrous and dangerous. A healthy interpretation of the Bible acknowledges both, the structural unavailability of the text and the inevitable unilateralism of every reading. Therefore, a biblical hermeneutics of paradox does not aim and stop at the answer, but rather aims at the extension and enrichment of the question. Biblical hermeneutics is not and cannot be a synthetic and resolving instance of meaning. It is not a hermeneutic of clarity, but of complexity. Indeed, of dynamic complexity, that is, of paradox. The meaning sought thus always remains elusive, both in the text from which one starts (Bible), account taken of its structural ambivalence, and in the interpretation to which the reader arrives, because that legitimate and necessary interpretation, derived with effort and enthusiasm, nevertheless remains partial and transitory capable of touching the meaning only tangentially and provisionally. For this reason, the “reasonable doubt” is the best way to stand and marvel in front of the text.
