Mechanisms Affecting Emission in Rare-earth-activated Phosphors

Mechanisms Affecting Emission in Rare-earth-activated Phosphors PDF Author:

Book Description
The relatively poor efficiency of phosphor materials in cathodoluminescence with low accelerating voltages is a major concern in the design of field emission flat panel displays operated below 5 kV. The authors research on rare-earth-activated phosphors indicates that mechanisms involving interactions of excited activators have a significant impact on phosphor efficiency. Persistence measurements in photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) show significant deviations from the sequential relaxation model. This model assumes that higher excited manifolds in an activator de-excite primarily by phonon-mediated sequential relaxation to lower energy manifolds in the same activator ion. In addition to sequential relaxation, there appears to be strong coupling between activators, which results in energy transfer interactions. Some of these interactions negatively impact phosphor efficiency by nonradiatively de-exciting activators. Increasing activator concentration enhances these interactions. The net effect is a significant degradation in phosphor efficiency at useful activator concentrations, which is exaggerated when low-energy electron beams are used to excite the emission.

Rare Earth Activated Gedelonium Oxide Nanophosphors

Book Description
Phosphor materials find wide applications ranging from fluorescent display to luminescence immunoassay. These materials essentially convert one type of energy in to visible radiation and hence, phosphor materials are called optical transducer. They are generally crystalline in nature. Phosphors with high quantum efficiency, effective excitation and absorption, colour parity, longer ifetime and lower cost, as well as better morphology are required. Surface properties have important function for hosphors.Spherical phosphors are optimum morphology in application. The spherical particles are easy to be packed density so that the screen and display can obtain high definition. In addition the dense packed small particles can prevent phosphors from aging.

Synthesis and Luminescence Properties of Rare Earth Activated Phosphors for Near UV-emitting LEDs for Efficacious Generation of White Light

Book Description
Solid state white-emitting lighting devices based on LEDs outperform conventional light sources in terms of lifetime, durability, and luminous efficiency. Near UV-LEDs in combination with blue-, green-, and red-emitting phosphors show superior luminescence properties over the commercialized blue-emitting LED with yellow-emitting phosphors. However, phosphor development for near UV LEDs is a challenging problem and a vibrant area of research. In addition, using the proper synthesis technique is an important consideration in the development of phosphors. In this research, efficient blue-, green-yellow, red-emitting, and color tunable phosphors for near UV LEDs based white light are identified and prepared by various synthetic methods such as solid state reaction, sol-gel/Pechini, co-precipitation, hydrothermal, combustion and spray-pyrolysis. Blue-emittingLiCaPO4:Eu2, Green/yellow-emitting (Ba, Sr)2SiO4:Eu2, color tunable solid solutions of KSrPO4−(Ba, Ca)2SiO4:Eu2+, and red-emitting (Ba, Sr, Ca)3MgSi2O:Eu2+, Mn2+ show excellent excitation profile in the near UV region, high quantum efficiency, and good thermal stability for use in solid state lighting applications. In addition, different synthesis methods are analyzed and compared, with the goal of obtaining ideal phosphors, which should have not only have high luminous output but also optimal particle size (~150 - 400 nm) and spherical morphology. For Sr2SiO4:Eu2+, the sol-gel method appears to be the best method. For Ba2SiO4:Eu2+, the co-precipitation method is be the best. Lastly, the fabrication of core/SiO2 shell particles alleviate surface defects and improve luminescence output and moisture stability of nano and micron sized phosphors. For nano-sized Y2O3:Eu3+, Y2SiO5:Ce3+, Tb3+, and (Ba, Sr)2SiO4, the luminescence emission intensity of the core/shell particles were significantly higher than that of bare cores. Additionally, the moisture stability is also improved by SiO2 shells, the luminescence output of SiO2 coated green emitting Ca3SiO4Cl2:Eu2+ and blue emitting Ca2PO4Cl:Eu2+ phosphors is comparable to that of fresh phosphors although bare phosphors shows significant luminescence quenching after water exposure.

Book Description
The results reveal that the synthesized Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð phosphor with favorable photoluminescent properties is a desirable candidate as the evaporated target in the deposition process. The results also indicate that the Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð films deposited onto quartz fabric with a substrate temperature of 2504́3 exhibit optimal photoluminescent intensity after annealing treatment which is improved by 32.67% as opposed to annealed films grown at room temperature. The maximum photoluminescent intensity of the annealed Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð films deposited onto quartz fabric is observed with a deposition time of 15 min, which is improved by 124.73% in comparison to a deposition time of 5 min. The emission brightness is optimal when the annealed films are prepared with a deposition current of 140 mA, and the photoluminescent intensity is increased by 6317% when the deposition current is increased from 80 to 140 mA. Both annealing methods can effectively improve the photoluminescent properties of the Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð films deposited onto quartz fabric. The highest emission brightness of the Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð films deposited onto quartz fabric is obtained after furnace annealing at 10004́3 for 3 h and CO2́2 laser heating with a resolution of 35 dpi for 120 Îơs, and the photoluminescent intensity is improved by 1234.41% and 366.73%, respectively compared to that of the as-deposited films. This study indicates that EBE is a promising technology for the development of photoluminescent textiles. The experimental results suggest that the improved morphology and crystal properties of the Y2́2O2́3:Eu℗đ1́ð films are the major reasons for the increased photoluminescent properties of the deposited quartz fabric. The prepared photoluminescent textile that emits a red light has potential applications for anti-counterfeiting, security warning and decoration purposes.
