Performance Based Building Design 1

Performance Based Building Design 1 PDF Author: Hugo S. L. Hens
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3433601976
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description

Rain Penetration of Walls of Unit Masonry

Rain Penetration of Walls of Unit Masonry PDF Author: Thomas Ritchie
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 4

Book Description
Rain penetration of walls of unit masonry is a common problem, which may arise for several reasons. When units and mortar are not completely bonded together penetration may occur at the interface. In addition, when permeable units are used, leakage may take place through them. Structural cracks form yet another path for rain penetration. In the design of a building consideration should be given to the possibility of stresses being set up in the masonry from differential movements of various parts of the building. Cavity wall construction affords a means of obtaining resistance to rain penetration and walls of this type have come into extensive use where severe exposure to rain has caused leakage problems in solid walls. Treatment of a masonry wall affected by rain penetration requires 'plugging' of the openings between mortar and unit, and in addition, often a treatment of the face of the unit. (Author).

Principles of Element Design

Principles of Element Design PDF Author: Peter Rich
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135141444
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
The construction of buildings is learnt through experience and the inheritance of a tradition in forming buildings over several thousand years. Successful construction learns from this experience which becomes embodied in principles of application. Though materials and techniques change, various elements have to perform the same function. 'Principles of Element Design' identifies all the relevant elements and then breaks these elements down into all their basic constituents, making it possible for students to fully understand the given theory and principles behind each part. As all building projects are subject to guidance through the Building Regulations and British Standards, this book gives an immediate reference back to relevant information to help practitioners and contractors identify key documents needed. Yvonne Dean B.A. (Hons) B.A (Open) RIBA, an architect, energy consultant and materials technologist. She also has 15 years experience as a lecturer, travels widely and is a guest lecturer at many universities. She pioneered an access course for Women into Architecture and Building, which has been used as a template by others, and has been instrumental in helping to change the teaching of technology for architects and designers. Peter Rich AA Dipl. (Hons) Architect, started his career with 14 years experience as a qualified architectural technician. He then joined the AA School of Architecture, working with Bill Allen and John Bickerdike after his graduation, later becoming a partner of Bickerdike Allen Rich and Partners. He also taught building construction at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and architectural design at the Polytechnic of North London. He now acts as a Consultant.

Book Description
Performance-Based Building Design This third book in a series of three dealing with building physics and its application, looks to the impact a performance requirements linked approach has on building design and construction. It starts with a resumption of what’s expected from buildings, followed by discussing a range of materials needed to guarantee a correct heat, air, moisture response. Then, looked is to preparing the building site, the excavations needed, the foundations, the below-grade parts and spaces, the structural systems commonly used, the floors, different types of outer walls, different types of roof assemblies, inside walls, the glazing, windows, outer doors, glass façades, bal-conies, all kind of shafts, chimneys, stairs, timber-frame construction, wall, floor and ceiling finishes. Each time again, not only the heat, air, moisture related metrics but also structural integrity, durability, fire safety, acoustics, maintenance, sustainability and buildability are dis- cussed. The whole ends with looking to the risks deficiencies may cause. For this new edition, all chapters have been critically reviewed, actualized and gifted with additional figures where needed, so incorporating the experiences gained from 38 years of teaching to architectural and building engineering students, from 36 years of research, and from 53 years of practice, curing damage cases due to failing performance.
