Computational Studies, Nanotechnology, and Solution Thermodynamics of Polymer Systems

Computational Studies, Nanotechnology, and Solution Thermodynamics of Polymer Systems PDF Author: Mark D. Dadmun
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306471108
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
This text is the published version of many ofthe talks presented at two symposiums held as part of the Southeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (SERMACS) in Knoxville, TN in October, 1999. The Symposiums, entitled Solution Thermodynamics of Polymers and Computational Polymer Science and Nanotechnology, provided outlets to present and discuss problems of current interest to polymer scientists. It was, thus, decided to publish both proceedings in a single volume. The first part of this collection contains printed versions of six of the ten talks presented at the Symposium on Solution Thermodynamics of Polymers organized by Yuri B. Melnichenko and W. Alexander Van Hook. The two sessions, further described below, stimulated interesting and provocative discussions. Although not every author chose to contribute to the proceedings volume, the papers that are included faithfully represent the scope and quality of the symposium. The remaining two sections are based on the symposium on Computational Polymer Science and Nanotechnology organized by Mark D. Dadmun, Bobby G. Sumpter, and Don W. Noid. A diverse and distinguished group of polymer and materials scientists, biochemists, chemists and physicists met to discuss recent research in the broad field of computational polymer science and nanotechnology. The two-day oral session was also complemented by a number of poster presentations. The first article of this section is on the important subject of polymer blends. M. D.

E = Einstein

E = Einstein PDF Author: Donald Goldsmith
Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.
ISBN: 9781402763199
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
In the history of physics, there has been no greater visionary than Albert Einstein. Through his revolutionary Theory of Relativity, he changed the way we look at the universe. But there is more to Einstein than just E=mc[superscript 2]. "In addition to contributing to many branches of physical science," relates Gerald Holton, "he also published widely on social and philosophical issues. He challenged current philosophies, both of science and of the state. He waged a constant fight for individual liberty and dignity against persecution and war." Einstein's ideas and views continue to play a role in contemporary science and in the popular imagination. Now two distinguished editors have compiled an enlightening collection of important and penetrating essays that shed light on many fascinating aspects of this great man. The esteemed contributors cover both important milestones and lesser known facts to present a thoughtful portrait. Historical black-and-white photographs and color illustrations complete this engaging anthology. Book jacket.

The First Export Era Revisited

The First Export Era Revisited PDF Author: Sandra Kuntz-Ficker
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319623400
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This book challenges the wide-ranging generalizations that dominate the literature on the impact of export-led growth upon Latin America during the first export era. The contributors to this volume contest conventional approaches, stemming from structuralism and dependency theory, which portray a rather negative view of the impact of nineteenth-century globalization upon Latin America. It has been considered that, as a result of the role of Latin American countries as providers of raw materials produced in enclaves dominated by foreign capital, their participation in the world economy has had adverse consequences for their long-term development. This volume addresses a representative sample of countries with varied initial conditions and resource endowments, a diverse productive specialization, as well as different degrees of integration to the world economy. This allows a direct comparison among the different experiences within the region, which in turn enables a more nuanced understanding of the contribution of exports to economic growth and economic modernization. Seven national case studies are presented – Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico and Bolivia – which offer an insight into the successes of a region traditionally viewed as disadvantaged by globalization and export-led growth. Winner of the Vicens Vives prize for the best economic history book granted by the Spanish Economic History Association.

Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics

Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics PDF Author: Michael Tinkham
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486131661
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
This graduate-level text develops the aspects of group theory most relevant to physics and chemistry (such as the theory of representations) and illustrates their applications to quantum mechanics. The first five chapters focus chiefly on the introduction of methods, illustrated by physical examples, and the final three chapters offer a systematic treatment of the quantum theory of atoms, molecules, and solids. The formal theory of finite groups and their representation is developed in Chapters 1 through 4 and illustrated by examples from the crystallographic point groups basic to solid-state and molecular theory. Chapter 5 is devoted to the theory of systems with full rotational symmetry, Chapter 6 to the systematic presentation of atomic structure, and Chapter 7 to molecular quantum mechanics. Chapter 8, which deals with solid-state physics, treats electronic energy band theory and magnetic crystal symmetry. A compact and worthwhile compilation of the scattered material on standard methods, this volume presumes a basic understanding of quantum theory.
