Book Description
Thought-provoking, challenging, compelling, and passionate are all words used to describe Psalms-Poetry for Warriors. While reading this collection of poems you'll think of it as a genre by itself, standing alone. Then, reflecting on the original Psalms (in the Bible), you realize this is a cry of the heart to which all great poets aspire. You don't have to ask to see this author's life written on the pages. In a time where spoken word simultaneously explains and perplexes, Takieaa ReyFaun has created a niche where her thoughts demand satisfaction poetically. You will experience her touching rhymes-not to be considered religious, although spiritual-on subjects as meaningful as love and as complicated as the battle between mind and spirit. Not to be taken lightly, Psalms-Poetry for Warriors seems to be ahead of its time, yet it has come to us all right on time.

Warrior Psalms

Warrior Psalms PDF Author: John Mabus

Pages : 102

Book Description
Over the last seven months, I have served as the chaplain for a task force made up of dedicated warriors who are a daily inspiration of devotion, selflessness and honor. The inspiration for these reflections came from the moments in prayer that I spent with these warriors prior to their missions. Often, our prayer time would start with reading a portion of one of King David's psalms. King David stands out as the definitive human warrior of the Bible who was also a man after God's own heart. His life was marked by many of the same personal battles that face our contemporary warriors. This book contains short reflections on 31 of King David's psalms (possibly to be read over the course of a month). King David's psalms help us draw nearer to God in various types of situations. The reflections are arranged not in the order that the psalms come in the Book of Psalms but arranged by type of psalm. Just like with books (non-fiction, novels, poetry, or comic books), there are different types of psalms. Each type of psalm has its own purpose, characteristics and style. Each week of readings focus on a different type of psalm to explore, understand and apply. It is the purpose of these reflections to point us not just to the great Warrior King David, but to his King and God- God himself.

Psalm of the Heart-Fortress

Psalm of the Heart-Fortress PDF Author: Ronald Montgomery
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781432710736
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
A Safe Haven for the Heart! PSALM of the Heart-Fortress is more than a collection of poems & love songs. Think of this book as the safe haven for the heart; the home for a mystical and metaphorical organ that provides testimony to our intent and feelings. Frequently the heart is a "broker of truth," and at other times the "emissary of deceit." In these pages the territory for which wars have been waged, lost and won are chronicled and explored from the inside - out. On the heart's battleground, Ron Montgomery provides a wide breath of experiences ranging from the spiritual to worldly. The message here is about the growth that occurs at the deepest most intimate levels, and provides a common understanding of metaphors and analogies that describe the individual joys and pains of living "here" in our respective skins. The author invites readers to join him on this journey as a prelude to what comes next.

The Psalms of a Warrior's Heart PDF Author: Emmanuel Young
Publisher: Dove House Books
ISBN: 9781563154249
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
The author considers his work a true story essay collection, and indeed its main components, both in terms of poetry and prose, are based on the author's recollections of his own, personal walk with God. Although intended for both Christian readers and those who are not yet believers, Psalms is not proselytizing or chastising in its tone or content. The author's aim is to let his experiences stand, beliefs, and meditations on the world inspire his readers to make wise, ethical decisions. A wonderful first Communion book for young people, and a comforting gift for invalids, the elderly, the bereaved, or anyone who could benefit from a meaningful examination of what it means to be a Christian.

Poetic Heroes

Poetic Heroes PDF Author: Mark S. Smith
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 0802867928
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 660

Book Description
Warfare exerts a magnetic power, even a terrible attraction, in its emphasis on glory, honor, and duty. In order to face the terror of war, it is necessary to face how our biblical traditions have made it attractive -- even alluring. In this book Mark Smith undertakes an extensive exploration of "poetic heroes" across a number of ancient cultures in order to understand the attitudes of those cultures toward war and warriors. Smith examines the Iliad and the Gilgamesh; Ugaritic poems commemorating Baal, Aqhat, and the Rephaim; and early biblical poetry, including the battle hymn of Judges 5 and the lament of David over Saul and Jonathan in 2 Samuel 1. Smith's Poetic Heroes analyzes the importance of heroic poetry in early Israel and its disappearance after the time of David, building on several strands of scholarship in archaeological research, poetic analysis, and cultural reconstruction.

Poet Warrior: A Memoir

Poet Warrior: A Memoir PDF Author: Joy Harjo
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393248534
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
National bestseller An ALA Notable Book Three-term poet laureate Joy Harjo offers a vivid, lyrical, and inspiring call for love and justice in this contemplation of her trailblazing life. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. A musical, kaleidoscopic, and wise follow-up to Crazy Brave, Poet Warrior reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. Harjo listens to stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, and the messengers of a changing earth—owls heralding grief, resilient desert plants, and a smooth green snake curled up in surprise. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member. Moving fluidly between prose, song, and poetry, Harjo recounts a luminous journey of becoming, a spiritual map that will help us all find home. Poet Warrior sings with the jazz, blues, tenderness, and bravery that we know as distinctly Joy Harjo.
