Guidelines on Soil and Vegetation Sampling for Radiological Monitoring

Guidelines on Soil and Vegetation Sampling for Radiological Monitoring PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201022189
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
This publication addresses the sampling of soil and vegetation in terrestrial ecosystems, including agricultural, forest and urban environments, contaminated with radionuclides from events such as radiation accidents, radiological incidents and former nuclear activities. It considers sampling strategies and programmes, which are relevant for both emergency and existing exposure situations. Practical advice is provided on the design and implementation of sampling programmes for soil and vegetation within the framework of environmental monitoring. Examples of best practice on the formulation of optimized sampling strategies for different exposure situations are given based on the experience and lessons learned from implementation of past and existing programmes.

Programmes and Systems for Source and Environmental Radiation Monitoring

Programmes and Systems for Source and Environmental Radiation Monitoring PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201124098
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
The objective of this Safety Report is to complement IAEA Safety Guide RS-G-1.8 and to provide the methodological and technical details of the design and operation of monitoring programmes for different radionuclides, environmental media and types of facility. It also covers general issues of emergency monitoring during and in the aftermath of an accidental release of radionuclides and gives an outline of dose assessment procedures based on monitoring data and the reporting of information to the regulatory body.

Monitoring and Surveillance of Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities

Monitoring and Surveillance of Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201155139
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on how to plan and perform monitoring and surveillance programmes for disposal facilities for radioactive waste. The Safety Guide considers monitoring and surveillance for near surface disposal facilities, for geological disposal facilities and for facilities for the disposal of waste from mining and from mineral processing. The publication provides recommendations on how to use results from the monitoring and surveillance of radioactive waste disposal facilities over their entire lifetime. It covers the different objectives of monitoring and surveillance for the different periods of the lifetime of disposal facilities, from the initiation of work on a candidate site to the period after closure of the disposal facility.

Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space

Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309057442
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 151

Book Description
Advanced Technology for Human Support in Space was written in response to a request from NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications (OLMSA) to evaluate its Advanced Human Support Technology Program. This report reviews the four major areas of the program: advanced life support (ALS), environmental monitoring and control (EMC), extravehicular activities (EVA), and space human factors (SHF). The focus of this program is on long-term technology development applicable to future human long-duration space missions, such as for a hypothetical new mission to the Moon or Mars.

Prospective Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment for Facilities and Activities

Prospective Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment for Facilities and Activities PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201025180
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on a general framework for performing prospective radiological impact assessments for facilities and activities, to estimate and control the radiological effects on the public and on the environment. This radiological environmental impact assessment is intended for planned exposure situations as part of the authorization process and, when applicable, as part of a governmental decision making process for facilities and activities. The situations covered in the assessment include both exposures expected to occur in normal operation as well as potential exposures. The assessment of the radiological impacts includes consideration of the risk of radiation effects for humans and for populations of non-human biota. Guidance is provided on the assumptions and input data to be used, the necessary models for environmental transfer and radiation dose assessment and the definition and use of criteria for informing decisions.

Environmental and Source Monitoring for Purposes of Radiation Protection

Environmental and Source Monitoring for Purposes of Radiation Protection PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
The purpose of this Safety Guide is to provide international guidance, coherent with contemporary radiation protection principles and IAEA safety requirements, on the strategy of monitoring in relation to: (a) control of radionuclide discharges under practice conditions, and (b) intervention, such as in cases of nuclear or radiological emergencies or past contamination of areas with long lived radionuclides. Three categories of monitoring are discussed: monitoring at the source of the discharge (source monitoring), monitoring in the environment (environmental monitoring) and monitoring of individual exposure in emergencies (individual monitoring). The Safety Guide also provides general guidance on assessment of the doses to critical groups of the population due to the presence of radioactive materials or radiation fields in the environment both from routine operation of nuclear and other related facilities (practice) and from nuclear or radiological emergencies and past contamination of areas with long lived radionuclides (intervention). The dose assessments are based on the results of source monitoring, environmental monitoring, individual monitoring or their combinations. This Safety Guide is primarily intended for use by national regulatory bodies and other agencies involved in national systems of radiation monitoring, as well as by operators of nuclear installations and other facilities where natural or human made radionuclides are treated and monitored.
