The North American Mosaic

Pages : 240

Book Description
The North American Mosaic has four overarching features. First, it is, to the extent feasible, based on comparable information on the status and trends of major indicators of the state of the environment in Canada,Mexico, and the United States. Second, the report confirms that these three countries together make up an incredibly complex, dynamic, and interconnected ecosystem in which humans play a dominant and decisive role. Third, the report raises important and sometimes disquieting questions concerning the sustainability of some current trends. Finally, the report is a reminder that our economic, social, and physical well-being are utterly dependent on the life-sustaining services provided by nature. This report emphasizes the importance of developing mutually compatible economic, social, and environmental goals and policies across the three-country region.

Cost-benefit Aspects of Food Irradiation Processing

Cost-benefit Aspects of Food Irradiation Processing PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 528

Book Description
Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA, FAO and WHO, Aix-en-Provence, 1-5 March 1993. Natural isotopes are among the most powerful tools for investigating past and current environmental changes. The purpose of the symposium was to evaluate the costs and benefits of irradiation for treating various food items either alone or in combination with other processes. The evaluation covered applications of the technology in terms of reducing food losses as well as the possible economic impact of irradiation in controlling or reducing certain food-borne illnesses and in expanding trade in certain food items. Discussion focused on the economic benefits of irradiation to control a number of food-borne diseases, especially those originating from the consumption of food of animal origin, and on the potential economic benefit from radiation as a quarantine treatment for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis

Book Description
This is the twenty-sixth volume in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's series, Connections: The EERI Oral History Series. EERI began this series to preserve the recollections of some of those who have had pioneering careers in the field of earthquake engineering.Mete Sozen (1932-2018) is the Karl H. Kettelhut Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, Indiana, United States.Besides his academic interest in the development of design codes for concrete structures, Sozen is notable for his contributions to the official post 9/11-government studies of terrorist attacks, including the Oklahoma City bombing, and The Pentagon. Sozen also led a team that created an engineering simulation of American Airlines Flight 11 crashing into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The computer-animated visualizations were made entirely from the simulation data. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1977 for contributions to understanding the structural design and behavior of buildings and bridges subjected to earthquake motions.Sozen received his undergraduate education at Robert College (Turkey, 1951) and his master's (1952) and doctoral degrees (1957) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Phosphorus in Environmental Technology

Phosphorus in Environmental Technology PDF Author: E. Valsami-Jones
Publisher: IWA Publishing
ISBN: 1843390019
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 681

Book Description
Phosphorus in Environmental Technology: Principles and Applications, provides a definitive and detailed presentation of state-of-the-art knowledge on the environmental behaviour of phosphorus and its applications to the treatment of waters and soils. Special attention is given to phosphorus removal for recovery technologies, a concept that has emerged over the past 5-6 years. The book features an all-encompassing approach: the fundamental science of phosphorus (chemistry, geochemistry, mineralogy, biology), key aspects of its environmental behaviour and mobility, industrial applications (treatment, removal, recovery) and the principles behind such applications, novel biotechnologies and, importantly, it also addresses socio-economic issues which often influence implementation and the ultimate success of any new technology. A detailed subject index helps the reader to find their way through the different scientific and technological aspects covered, making it an invaluable reference work for students, professionals and consultants dealing with phosphorus-related environmental technologies. State-of-the-art knowledge on the behaviour of phosphorus and its applications to environmental science and technology. Covers all aspects of phosphorus in the environment, engineered and biological systems; an interdisciplinary text.

Structural Analysis with the Finite Element Method. Linear Statics

Structural Analysis with the Finite Element Method. Linear Statics PDF Author: Eugenio Oñate
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402087438
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 894

Book Description
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS WITH THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD Linear Statics Volume 1 : The Basis and Solids Eugenio Oñate The two volumes of this book cover most of the theoretical and computational aspects of the linear static analysis of structures with the Finite Element Method (FEM). The content of the book is based on the lecture notes of a basic course on Structural Analysis with the FEM taught by the author at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain for the last 30 years. Volume1 presents the basis of the FEM for structural analysis and a detailed description of the finite element formulation for axially loaded bars, plane elasticity problems, axisymmetric solids and general three dimensional solids. Each chapter describes the background theory for each structural model considered, details of the finite element formulation and guidelines for the application to structural engineering problems. The book includes a chapter on miscellaneous topics such as treatment of inclined supports, elastic foundations, stress smoothing, error estimation and adaptive mesh refinement techniques, among others. The text concludes with a chapter on the mesh generation and visualization of FEM results. The book will be useful for students approaching the finite element analysis of structures for the first time, as well as for practising engineers interested in the details of the formulation and performance of the different finite elements for practical structural analysis. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS WITH THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD Linear Statics Volume 2: Beams, Plates and Shells Eugenio Oñate The two volumes of this book cover most of the theoretical and computational aspects of the linear static analysis of structures with the Finite Element Method (FEM).The content of the book is based on the lecture notes of a basic course on Structural Analysis with the FEM taught by the author at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain for the last 30 years. Volume 2 presents a detailed description of the finite element formulation for analysis of slender and thick beams, thin and thick plates, folded plate structures, axisymmetric shells, general curved shells, prismatic structures and three dimensional beams. Each chapter describes the background theory for each structural model considered, details of the finite element formulation and guidelines for the application to structural engineering problems Emphasis is put on the treatment of structures with layered composite materials. The book will be useful for students approaching the finite element analysis of beam, plate and shell structures for the first time, as well as for practising engineers interested in the details of the formulation and performance of the different finite elements for practical structural analysis.
