The process of froth flotation is an outstanding example of applied surface chemistry. It is extensively used in the mining, mineral, metallurgical, and chemical industries for separation and selective concentration of individual minerals and other solids. Substances so concentrated serve as raw materials for producing appropriate metals and chemicals. The importance of flotation in technology is chiefly due to the ease with which it can be made selective and versatile and to the economy of the process. The objective of this book is to review the fundamentals of surface chemistry together with the relevant aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry that-in the opinion of the author-are important ~ control of the froth flotation process. The review updates the information that had been available in books by Sutherland and Wark (1955), Gaudin (1957), Klassen and Mokrousov (1963), and GIembotsky et al. (1963). There are only few topics in organometallic chemistry, which have stimulated research activities in as many areas, as transition-metal carbene (alkylidene) complexes. About 25 years after the first planned synthesis of a carbene complex in E.O. Fischer's laboratory in Munich the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Transition-Metal Carbene Complexes was the first meeting which,brought together scientists from different disciplines to discuss inorganic, organic, theoretical structural catalysis-related aspects of metal carbene chemistry. The 70th birthday of Professor E.O. Fischer was a good occasion for this enterprise. The organizers of the meeting (K.D. Dotz, Marburg; F.R. KreiBl, Munchen; U. Schubert, Wurzburg) were encouraged by the fact that most of the leading scientists in this area were able to participate in the workshop. The very high standard of the contributions is reflected in this book, which contains papers from the majority of the participants. The Proceedings show the state of the art in metal carbene chemistry and will hopefully be a landmark in the development of this area of chemistry. Generous financial support for the workshop and for the preparation of this book was provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and some companies. In early 1973, I returned to Israel from a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, and was accepted as a lecturer in the Department of Applied Microbiology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Shortly after my return, Professor Richard Mateles, who at that time was head of the Department, suggested that I purchase a good and comprehensive book on single cell protein (SCP) in order to expand my general knowledge in the subject I had started then to work on; that was microbial utilization of one-carbon (C ) compounds. l Naturally, I took his advice (after all, he was the Boss) and bought the book, which was the only general book published on this subject at that time, and was based on papers presented at the First International Conference on Single Cell Protein, held at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), on October 1967 (Mateles and Tannenbaum, editors) [1]. Through this book I became acquainted with the world's hunger problem that existed in the past, and ways in which it was to be solved by SCP products prepared from CO , fossil-based raw 2 materials, and from wastes.
