This bibliography of the Mexican War holdings of the libraries at the University of Texas at Arlington is the product of more than forty years' collecting and research. As a result of his recognition that Texana collections would be incomplete without items from the period up to the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by Mexico in May, 1848, Jenkins Garrett began this bibliography in earnest in the 1950s, at a time when Mexican War items were not even listed as a separate category by collectors. Arranged by chapters according to topics or type of holding, the bibliography is designed to give extensive and accurate descriptive information of approximately 2,500 items of interest to scholars and collectors. Each entry thus includes full title page wording, edition information, collation, other library locations, and notes, though the bibliography is not annotated per se. Extensive appendixes present alternate methods of referencing documents and compilations of data that may prove helpful in studying the Mexican War.

Much of the so-called Age of Santa Anna in the history of independent Mexico remains a mystery and no decade is less well understood than the years from 1835 to 1846. In 1834, the ruling elite of middle class hombres de bien concluded that a highly centralised republican government was the only solution to the turmoil and factionalism that had characterised the new nation since its emancipation from Spain in 1821. The central republic was thus set up in 1835, but once again civil strife, economic stagnation, and military coups prevailed until 1846, when a disastrous war with the United States began in which Mexico was to lose half of its national territory. From 1861 to 1866, the French incorporated the armies of Austria, Belgium—including forces from Crimea to Egypt—to fight and subdue the regime of Mexico’s Benito Juárez during the time of the U.S. Civil War. France viewed this as a chance to seize Mexican territory in a moment they were convinced the Confederacy would prevail and take over Mexico. With both sides distracted in the U.S., this was their opportunity to seize territory in North America.
