Dissociative Recombination of Molecular Ions with Electrons

Dissociative Recombination of Molecular Ions with Electrons PDF Author: Steven L. Guberman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461500834
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
Dissociative Recombination of Molecular Ions with Electrons is a comprehensive collection of refereed papers describing the latest developments in dissociative recombination research. The papers are written by the leading researchers in the field. The topics covered include the use of microwave afterglows, merged beams and storage rings to measure rate coefficients and to identify the products and their yields. The molecules studied range in size from the smallest, H2+, to bovine insulin ions. The theoretical papers cover the important role of Rydberg states and the use of wave packets and quantum defect theory to deduce cross sections, rate constants and quantum yields. Several theoretical and experimental papers address the controversial topic of H3+ dissociative recombination and its importance in the interstellar medium. Dissociative recombination studies of other molecular ions in the interstellar medium and in cometary and planetary atmospheres are covered. Ionization is an important competitive process to dissociative recombination and its competition with predissociation and its role in the reverse process of the association of neutral species is presented. Dissociative attachment, in which an electron attaches to a neutral molecule, has many similarities to dissociative recombination. The topics covered include the accurate calculation of electron affinities, attachment to molecules, clusters, and to species absorbed on solid surfaces and electron scattering by a molecular anion.

Book Description
Dissociative recombination and related processes are specially effective in interstellar media where the very low density and temperature favour exothermic reactions. They also play an important role in various types of “cold” plasmas. This work reports the study of dissociative recombination of H2+, Ne2+ and HCNH+ molecular ions. The molecular states and their mutual interactions (for Ne2+ + e- and HCNH+ + e- systems) are calculated by ab initio methods: CI calculations for the bound part of the energy spectrum and electron-molecule scattering within the framework of the complex Kohn variational method for the continuous part. The low-energy dynamics (H2+ et Ne2+) is then treated by the multichannel quantum defect method. Several extensions of the formalism were developed in order to take account of the “off the energy shell” effects and to explicitly include the non-adiabatic couplings of the Rydberg states open to dissociation either between them or with the ion continuum.

An Introduction to Differential Manifolds

An Introduction to Differential Manifolds PDF Author: Jacques Lafontaine
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319207350
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Aeronomy

Aeronomy PDF Author: P. M. Banks
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483260666
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 445

Book Description
Aeronomy, Part A is an attempt to make a comprehensive exposition of the processes in aeronomy, the study of composition, movement, and thermal balance of the upper regions of the planetary atmosphere. The text covers topics such as atmospheric regions and atmospheric density, the temperature and molecular mass of the atmosphere; the permanent constituents and the molecular and isotonic composition of the homosphere; and the transition from the homosphere to the heterosphere. Also covered are topics such as the temperature gradient and energies in the thermosphere, conditions at 200km and above 250km, solar radiation and ionization, and aeronomic reactions. The book is recommended for scientists, especially natural physicists, who would like to know more about the field of aeronomy and its advances.

Minimum competence in scientific English

Minimum competence in scientific English PDF Author: Sue Blattes
Publisher: L'Editeur : EDP Sciences
ISBN: 9782868835888
Category : English language
Languages : fr
Pages : 264

Book Description
La méthode originale repose sur l'analyse des fonctions et structures nécessaires : measurement, frequency, comparison, modification, link words, time, cause and consequence, hypothesis, modality, purpose and process, impersonal forms, compound nouns and adjectives.
